Maybe ask Julian Ilett regarding solar stuff, as you probably well know he's into it, and the supporting tech such as MPPT (or Muppet as he tends to refer to it as). This has been a fun lil journey to follow along, thanks for the ride :) RCCB - Residual Current Circuit Breaker, just in case you were wondering. It monitors incoming and outgoing current via windings in a coil, any difference between Live and Neutral, it opens the circuit.

SPDs are used for protection from transients and switched overvoltages. If neighouring properties within a couple of kM have lightning protection they will take this energy and send it straight to Earth. On its way under the ground the energy can be induced into telecommunications, pipes and power cables which will then be shared with the local properties as they are all connected to greater references of Earth in your electrical supply. On the flip side products are being manufactured with more and more sensitive electronics and fairly simplistic/rubbish MOVs for their own protection. That's why SPDs are now strongly recommended in properties today.

Very unusual grouping for a split load board. You'd normally put ground floor sockets and upstairs lighting on one side, and upstairs sockets and downstairs lights on the other. That way, you don't have an entire floor in darkness should the RCD trip. Also basically all of the sockets are currently on one RCD which doesn't make sense. I wonder what their rationale was?

This must be a huge relief, I had my house rewired (In the US) and it was a huge process. My main panel had like a 5% chance of starting a fire so it was good to get it done right.

Surges can come from inside the house or outside. sometimes when the grid is switched you may get a brownout or a surge.
Car batteries are not good for solar as they are designed for short high amp draw not longtime low current draw.

I've enjoyed these videos pal - thanks!

So they finished quicker? I thought you said it was an 8 day thing... do you get a discount? hahaha... Stoked to see you finally have lighting everywhere and all of that old wiring is disconnected (apart from the kitchen I guess). Did they remove that last light that was hanging in front of that window?

Huzzah it's done!! Enjoy the power 🔋

Surge is different to spike. Surge is a slower ramping up, spike is momentary like a lightning strike.

Solar power source number one would be Will Prouse channel dedicated to solar power only, mostly not grid connected but pretty good and cheap sources. he tests a lot, an awfull lot and calls stuff that is crap what it is, explains all the free stuff he gets and helps the manufacturers to improve.

That should help you a lot, but it all depends on what amount of space you have for the solar area and in which direction and which purpose.
Do not buy anything too small or new, get used stuff, start with at least 24 Volts for the obvious reason to get a good source for later use and gaining experience in 230 V generation instead of focussing on a 12V light system or cable circuit only.

Get used stuff, maybe from someone who had started small like you want with a 1 or 2 kW array and a small inverter for cheap but be aware that there are regulations in the UK that do not allow to connect some cheap models.

I know that from wales, cause Ian from the channel mad's tech had build his own garage roof supply and needed to buy another inverter cause the first was not allowed to be connected to the house and grid. Write him a mail to the icloud account mentioned in his videos and I guess he will tell you a bit more and help.

Missing fire gap foam filler in the back of the board :(

3:08 I notice that there is still a pair of cables feeding the old board. Is that going to be removed eventually? Nice to see everything coming along so well.

Take it the old board is still live for the existing kitchen?

Looks good, I would have preferred some trunking over the cabling to the board etc but at least it looks a neat and tidy job. You might look up the N Bundy Electrical video from 6 Jan 2022 if you ever consider using Bluetooth enabled switches to save having to chase walls out again. As I saw in another mention if the old board is no longer used why is it still connected given its none compliant with the present regulations ( which they tested to)?
