On September 25, 2024, a sheriff's deputy was patrolling a rural area in Stevens County, Washington, when he spotted a dog sitting in the middle of the road, far from any houses. After trying unsuccessfully to get the dog into his vehicle, he searched the nearby area for its owner but found no one. When he returned to the dog, it lay down in the road and then ran off down a less-traveled path. Following the dog, the deputy discovered a small cabin and found an 84-year-old man lying on the ground, calling for help. The elderly man had fallen and injured his leg and had been unable to get help for hours. Thanks to the dog, named Gita, a 13-year-old rescue, the deputy was able to save him in time.
