How To Record Your Set From The Club’s Mixer - DJ Tips & Tricks

The easiest way to record your DJ set is hitting "record" in your DJ software. But sometimes, you want to record the entire evening, not just your set (or you're DJing with music from streaming sources, which means your record button on your software will be disabled).

In this video, I talk you through how it's done, and show you how to do it on a couple of club mixers - as well as an example of a mixer where you can't do this. (Note: nearly all DJ controllers DON'T have this option, either.)

*hot tips for you guys*

Pioneer DJM mixers you need to have you channels below -6db (pref. -6 to -12db) PER CHANNEL to make sure it doesn't distort through the recorder as the main MASTER volume is NOT an accurate representation of the signal going into the recorder.

Tried so many times REC OUT and never could realise why it was always distorted asf

this is why

I did everything you said for using your iPhone. Ordered the TRRS adapter.

The signal is super distorted, regardless of levels being super low.

Thanks so much for the tutorial. Probably me being a donut, but followed instructions. Went for a recording session (without testing) and it recorded but with all the background noise, including me bashing the crap out of the cue button. At least I know now how much I talk to myself. I am using a 900 Nexus and the DJM-Rec app. anything else I need to do differently?

Thanks for the clear video. I'm having some trouble with this though, the problem seems to be connecting to the headphone output of my device to record. I've used multiple TRS to TRRS leads including the Rode SC4 and tried it using multiple mixers including the Allen & Heath Xone 23. Is there any advice you have why this might not work it's driving me mad! Thanks

Hey! great video and thank you for showing me this! I stumbled across a problem though. I'm using a Traktor S4 MK2 controller, wich has 2 main outs, so i wanted to use one for my speakers and one out as a record out through my android smartphone. I bought a rode CS3 TRRS to TRS cable but it doesn't work. Does it have something to do with the smartphone out? or is it not possible with my dj controller. Could you help me please? bless!

Thanks for the video. Can you advise if i still need a TRS/TRRS lead if i have a samsung phone?

On some mixers the mic output isn't routed to the booth or the record out only the master out. The xone92 being one. So if you want that mic included in the recording your going to have to use the master out as the recording take off.

Phil, what hardware/software do you use to record your videos? They look awesome.

you forgot to mention the Tascam or Zoom portable recorders.
I have a Tascam DR-40, and after updating the firmware, I've got it to record at the right levels from the record out.

can also with the DR-40 record a second stereo pair from the microphones at the same time as the output from the mixer.
later on after the recording, you can edit to blend the live sound of the crowd/dancefloor with the set played.

Phil could you make a video showing this tip in action and is this for recording audio only or is this how to record music whilst videoing ?

Thanks for this video! I have a question regarding recording your dj set with Audacity on your pc: I read some tutorials about this which recommended using an audio interface to do this, so it's: Mixer/record out --> audio interface --> 3.5 mm jack/pc mic in. But wouldn't it be easier to simply connect the "record out" of the mixer via an RCA/3.5 mm jack adapter? Or does the audio interface add quality/minimise chances of clipping etc?

If you have an iPhone do you just record the set on the app « recording »?

I used the REC out last night to record my set and its ended up sounding terrible and distorted. I connected my insta 360 1 r action camera with the mic adapter so that the camera would capture the audio (rca to 3.5mm cable). Any tips on how to get a clean sound while using this set up? thanks bud speak soon
