We’ve been told for decades that reducing salt intake is vital for preventing cardiovascular events. But now this piece of advice is being questioned by more and more people. What does the latest science say? Are these guidelines really supported by evidence?

This presentation by Dr. Andrew Mente from the recent Low Carb Breckenridge conference unravels the connection between salt, blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.

Among the findings from the PURE study, daily consumption of less than 3g of salt increased risk, like high salt consumption. See the graph at around 8:40 in Salim Yusuf's presentation of findings:

In the case of CVD, high salt consumption had very little effect but low salt consumption (less than 3g) had a high effect. See the graphs at around 9:50. The only category of people at risk for CVD were hyper-tensives, according to Dr Yusuf (12:00-12:30).
