A Grand Mal seizure, also known as a tonic-clonic seizure, can sometimes be preceded by an aura, which serves as an early warning sign. This aura is a unique experience for each person, often lasting only a few seconds or minutes, but providing a brief window of time before the full seizure begins. The sensations during an aura vary widely and can include visual disturbances like flashing lights, strange smells or tastes, a sudden wave of fear or anxiety, dizziness, or a sense of déjà vu.

Some individuals may feel a tingling sensation in their limbs, while others experience an overwhelming sense of unease or detachment from their surroundings. These auras are actually a small, localized seizure occurring in the brain before it spreads more widely, triggering the Grand Mal seizure. Because the experience of an aura is so personal and subjective, it can be a crucial tool for those with epilepsy to recognize and prepare for an impending seizure, though not everyone with Grand Mal seizures will experience an aura.

People record their seizures and other medical episodes so they can show medical professionals later on and help them better understand. And plus, we have no idea how hard it is to go through this so please don't judge someone when you haven't walked in their shoes

This depends on the person, but usually, having a seizure like this means that you might forget everything that happened. Having a record of the event can make it way easier for doctors to understand what is happening and where the seizures are occurring at, if you have more then one. This is why they ask witnesses about the seizure, how long it lasts, different movements, and more.

Im surprised to see a couple comments calling this one whole thing BS.

Ive worked with children who seizure for years, some with dravet syndrome, eome who were born epileptic, some who recieved a brain injury and now regularly seizures as a result.

A couple of those kids knew a seizure was coming and would somwtimes be able to make it to their "spot" where they could lie down and let it happen.

Im not sure of the full medical description but a seizure is a disruption in the electical impulses in the brain and can be incredibly conplicated in how they affect a person. Everyone and every seizure is different.

I have epilepsy and GOD, I hate seizures
My last seizure was five years ago (I'm on medications my whole life) and it was horrible. I had on in the restroom and when my stepfather heard me banging in there he knew what was happening. He just picked me up and put on the couch. Seconds before my seizure I felt weird and tried to shout for help but then I felt like I was struck by a lighting. Or like a computer glitch. It sounds weird, but for me it really felt like it. When paramedics arrived I told them to fuck off and to leave me alone. If a person after seizure is mean-don't mind it, we are just tired, confused and want to be left alone. I can't describe it. I just wanted to sleep, everything was too loud, too bright, I just wanted to sleep forever. I didn't care, I didn't want to go to hospital. Please, if you see a person having seizure-help them

That last clip of her when the paramedics arrived looks pretty realistic to me. It's also worth trying to stop friction burns from laminate/rough carpet with a pillow or something. My sister suffers from this when she has grandmals. Bloody awful!

Thank you for your common sense advise. Honestly, as a parent with a adult child that has had seizures since birth, I can not tell all the misinformation and bad advise I have received throughout these past 40 years. In fact, one you tube channel said it was best to punch a seizing person in the stomach to make them breath and stop the seizure. Crazy things are on YouTube channels.

This makes me want to cry. My daughter had a Gran Mal seizure a couple months ago. She did the same thing. She called out to me from her bedroom “ mom .. help me “ I went to her room and she said “ I don’t feel right, I have a weird feeling ..I think I’m going to have a seizure” then she started moaning and it started and was so long. She stopped breathing and was turning blue. My other daughter called 911. They got to her fast . I left the room as soon as they came in. I thought she was going to die. It was the worst thing ever! They took her to the hospital & gave her a loading dose of Keppra . We just found out a year ago that she has gray matter hetetropia in her brain when her brain was scanned after a seizure. That seizure was NOT bad like this last one . Having Gray matter hetetropia means there is a high chance she will have epilepsy.
These gran mal seizures are horrifying to witness! Do you know much about gray matter hetetropia?

Also don't put anything in their mouth! They can't choke on their tongue. This is a old wives tale. You might be surprised how many people try this.

Poor thing! Seizures are the absolute worst! I've got so many scars from stuff I've hit on the way down. I'm glad she was able to get herself down and some help before she stated seizing.

God. One of my brother’s friends died when we were younger because he was left alone in his college dorm and had a seizure. It’s was my first real experience with death, so this was a little triggering, but I’m glad to have learned anyway.

It's actually a common piece of advice that if you see someone having a seizure you should try to help them safely to the ground so that they don't fall or hurt themselves, and then set up your phone to record from a distance so that the video could be used to help the person and the paramedics know what happened

Watching this made me cry. She felt so helpless and her calling for her mom just put a hole in my heart and stomach. I'm so glad the paramedics and dispatcher were competent and fast to get her help!

I really wish I had auras. Every time I've had a seizure, its like one moment I was just going about my business and in the next moment I have people looking down at me while I'm extremely confused and disoriented. I have to be told what happened by those who witnessed it. If I had one while alone I'm not sure I'd even realize it, which is very scary to think about

I might be able to figure it out now that I've had the experience of several seizures and know how I feel afterwards (completely exhausted, confused and upset, vaguely ill feeling, cant talk or walk or think clearly for a while after coming back to consciousness). But when I was first diagnosed around 17, I totally could've had one in my room or something and had no idea why I felt so weird and tired

When I was in detox, a girl I'd become close with who was a severe alcoholic, only in her early 30s and already had such bad cirrhosis of the liver she needed to stop drinking or she would die, and while we were all sitting outside smoking, I noticed her get really quiet and stiff, then her eyes rolled back into her head and she started falling backwards off the table, I grabbed her and yelled for everyone to help me pin her in that position and hold her jaw open, and for someone to go tell staff to call 911. Thankfully everyone listened and we held her until EMTs were there to save her. I only knew what to do thanks to my father having seizures when I was growing up. And I wish to God I still had that girl's contact info, I wish I knew what happened to her, I hope she was able to pull through...

Note about seizure saftey. If you see someone having a seizure and they are with someone who is familiar with their seizures (family, friend, support worker) FOLLOW THAT PERSON'S LEAD. Different seizures look different and need different things.
Sincerely, someone who has had friends having seizures be put in danger by well meaning people who weren't listening to me

I’ve felt sudden onset of something overwhelming that makes me feel almost out of body. Then it hits and I want to pass out, but don’t— or haven’t yet. Been wondering lately if it’s a neuro thing, but since it’s only been the past year or so I talk myself out of that and into anxiety bc ofc every doctor will assume it’s anxiety before anything else. Except you, ofc.

Bless this young lady. I know that had to be extra scary. My sister and a friend both have grand mal seizures. I've been on the phone and with them when they've had them and it was scary for me. I can't imagine how scary it is for anyone who has them.

My uncle passed away the month before I was born from one of his seizures. He had it all his life, but, that day, only my grandpa was home and his didn't know my uncle was in his room. My uncle was only in highschool. No one has ever blamed my grandpa, but I have always wondered if he blames himself.
