presents episode 783 | Dr Paul Mason
Dr Shawn Baker podcast

Now have very good prospective data
that: on average: PEOPLE WITH
HIGHEST LDL LIVE LONGEST
so, how can APOb be a problem?
Liver makes VLDL, large lipoprotein
-has single APOb molecule on surface
-VLDL goes through circulation,
drops off some cargo
[triglycerides & cholesterol]
-shrinks a little

IT is then called IDL
-continues to circulate, drops more cargo
-called LDL, still has single APOb
-taken back up by liver
UNLESS APOb damaged, by
-glycation [by glucose]
-oxidation [by seed oil]
Example: donut: both sugar & seed oil

APOb damaged, accumulates in blood
-APOb also on VLDL & IDL
LDL associated with longevity
-VLDL [triglyceride rich]
associated with MORTALITY
We have two groups of APOb
-one giving longevity; other mortality
-test of APOb not clear on which
contributes more

'LDL subfraction' test would help...
-remember, if LDL molecule damaged,
cannot be taken out of circulation
-you would have many LDLs with APOb
IF YOU HAVE LOTS OF GLYCATION &
OXIDATION DAMAGE OCCURRING
-too many of these small dense LDL:
too much sugar, seed oils,
stress, pollution, mold, etc
"Damaged LDL is the problem;
NOT the healthy LDL"

That’s the best explanation I’ve come across the LDL conundrum. Dr. Mason is the best. I command you for the quality and content of your clips.

Thank you SO much for posting this. Such a great explanation of ApoB.

I had already seen the full lecture, but seeing these highlights was still helpful. Thanks!

Been watching Dr. Mason for a while now and I appreciate the videos. I have one question that remains and doesn't seem to be answered anywhere I look : we talk a lot about glycation from sugar and seed oils, but what about carbs in general. Will only sugar cause damage or even adding rice to any meal can cause glycation? We are told not to worry about high ldl on a low carb diet, but what about body builders who eat 400g of carbs daily, without any sugar. Can it cause glycation?

Someone i know clogged an artery at 40 years old, despite being an athlete all their life with good cardio, very light body weight and not eating sugar at all! So what caused it ? The father of that person died with 5 clogged arteries at 65. If you don't eat sugar at all and do cardio every day, how can that happen ? Would you only blame seed oils ? They both had extremely high LDL...

I would be very interested to know Dr. Mason’s take on this idea I have seen posited by some other doctors in the metabolic health space. In essence, they say that perhaps the reason that low LDL correlates with mortality is because many of the conditions that lead to end of life accompanied by a massive drop in LDL due to the bodies immune response to severe disease.

A COMPLEX QUESTION: What is a lean mass hyper responder (LMHR) to do when they have had a cardiac event and are also battling a mild level of pre-diabetes? They must stay low carb with diet to keep A1C down, but in doing so drive their LDL and consequently ApoB well above traditional “tolerances”. A pre-diabetic condition contributes to Atherosclerosis and a high ApoB number also contributes to the same risk. Or can they rely on the hope they can be relatively safe (like potentially Dave Feldman’s hypophysis suggests) despite a past coronary given good changes in diet, exercise, and other lifestyle improvements?

Dr Gil Carvalho who is an MD and PhD says high LDL is on a U shaped curve and so you can't say high LDL people live the longest. He's an expert at interpreting medical studies. What is your answer to that?

I don't understand. I have:

HDL: 90 mg/dL
LDL: 226 mg/dL
ApoB: 113 mg/dL
Triglycerides: 58 mg/dL

Should I be worried?

Your thesis about concerning higher Ldl concentrations are exactly opposite to the views of Dr Alo on YouTube. He labels this thesis about high LDL as basically garbage and people who promote this as charlatans. What is correct? Whom are we to believe? He claims to have data to prove he is correct.

How ironic that your outfit is called "Doctors to Trust."

Not true! LDL increases longevity?!!! LOL! I am happy to hear contrary opinions, but the couple of studies that contradict the view that high blood LDL-C and cholesterol in general, are pretty shoddy in terms of methodology, so most who actually read them would dismiss them.

If you use the adjectives "good" and "bad" with respect to LDL and/or cholesterol, then you are ignorant and should be ignored.
