Since 2009, Kepler has been observing our region of the Milky Way discovering hundreds of planets orbiting other stars. Not only can Kepler find other planets but it can also detect the orbital size, the temperature, and size of the planet and its star and other features. Check out the video to see how Kepler works.

How do they know that a planet is causing dip in its brightness.it could be a nearby object or an asteroid hindering the line of sight. Tracing its orbit is different thing.
