Starlink Got HACKED With a $25 Raspberry Pi Modchip

At BlackHat CyberSecurity Conference 2022, Belgian security researcher Lennert Wouters revealed an attack he developed against the Starlink User Terminal. By creating a voltage fault injection on the device, Lennert was able to bypass the firmware security verification and drop himself to a root terminal. From here, he was able to explore the starlink network freely.

I wonder how easy it would be to build a terminal from scratch. It's not like satellite communication is hard, just need to know the frequencies and be able to scan for it, then figure out the protocol, which would likely involve figuring out how they encrypt their communications, assuming that they do that. Never underestimate the stupidity of some programmers.

I just got told that my gen 1 Starlink dish would need to be replaced because of a bad cable ( they don't offer replacements ), if i buy a second dish you can bet your ass ill be hacking my gen 1 dish.

I thought that voltage fault injection is about cutting power to a chip for a very short amount of time to (hopefully) skip the execution of a certain instruction...

That's misleading. The terminal got hacked but the Starlink network remains uncompromised. Because Starlink is the name of the network it would be like saying "PlayStation network got hacked" when in reality someone made a PS4 mod chip. The attack is still cool though. You can probably do it cheaper if you use a Tango Nano 9K instead of a custom board.
