FTDX10 vs IC-7300 CW Shootout CQWWDX CW Contest

A comparison between the two radios during a contest.

The Icom bandpass filter is set to 300Hz (FIL3), not 500Hz like the Yaesu. Half of the video the Icom has the squelch closed, and it is clearly seen that you have the Icom Noise Reduction very high, to the maximum, in CW it is not recommended to exceed NR=3-4. The Yaesu AGC is in AUTO, and the ICOM is in FAST, this also influences the result, which should be practically identical, because the distance that separates these two transceivers in the Sherwood list is not possible to appreciate with the human ear. Ftdx10 is a much better cw rig - quieter receiver and 10x better noise reduction- has apf which the 7300 does not have… not even close with weak signals. With weak signals the 7300 does not keep up. In tight conditions the dx10 way more selective. I had the dx10 and it compares favorably to an ftdx5000mp and ftdx101mp. I’d recommend you check out videos from N4HNH for tips on how to run your dx10 to get the most out of it, but keep having fun in the process! Oh BTW dx10 much preferred on SSB as well with- superior NR and more audio tailoring- built in 3 band rx eq! Even the 101 does not have the rx eq. Icom not bad but dx10 excellent.

How you can decently compare receivers with the DNR in the circuit is a mistery to me.
I'm always surprized how difficult it seems to be to operate a receiver.

At the beginning the 7300 had the squelch on, so the reception was degraded. Very similar receptions because clicks and phase noise of CW signals don't allow to hear the better results of the 10 measured in laboratory. The 7300 is general coverage when the 10 is not because its IF is inside the HF spectrum and the 7300 is not plagued with images rejection problems. 7300 is modern technology when 10 is sixties technology.
