Review & Overview of the Kato N700A Series Shinkansen
2 Year Revisit
Model Railway Reviews
Today we take an in-depth look at the Kato N700A that was part of the 2021 release. The model represents the train in its Nozomi formation, with 16 carriages as per its JR Central specifications. This set is numbered as G3, which entered service 2012 and was manufactured by Nippon Sharyo.
We first begin with the original four carriages, seen in the original unboxing, then break down the extra carriage packs to complete the full set.
We examine the model in detail, pointing out what's accurate and what's inaccurate, then run the model on the layout with a few simple tests.
An unexpected issue interrupted the review halfway through filming, but was ultimately resolved.
Updated scores are found at the end of the video.

The N700A Shinkansen is a derivative and the second generation of the N700 series that were introduced in 2013. The subgroup had a few upgrades from the 80 N700 sets that entered service in 2007, although by 2015 they would also all be upgraded into N700As. 51 N700As were constructed for JR Central and 24 were for JR West, which, along with the 80 and 16 converted sets for the corresponding companies, would form a fleet of 171 16-carriage sets. The N700As sees their main use in operating the top services on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines. Until 2020, they were the flagship of the fleet, but with the introduction of the N700S, they will eventually replace the N700As on Nozomi services. The N700As are currently being phased out of JR Central's fleet as the introduction of the N700S series progresses. For now, JR West and JR Kyushu will be holding on to their trains, with no replacement planned as of yet.
