This Is A Test lyrics
A spider’s web we weave
Each strand is a memory we manifest
Is it a test?

I bid farewell to thee
And i give you grace under duress
This is a test

In all of the ways that I’m wrong
And the times you won’t say
And all the debates that were lost
This is a test

We’ve been looking away for too long
If you don’t mind, i don’t mind
If this is a test for your needs
Then this is a test for me
And I’m gonna pass it fine
We were just passing time

The roses bloomed for me
But the ice storm came and put em to bed
The flowers dead

The game play ends you see
My life’s too short to stay in my head
I’m out of the bed

In all of the ways that I’m wrong
And the times you won’t say
And all the debates that were lost
This is a test
We’ve been looking away for too long
If you don’t mind, i don’t mind
If this is a test for your needs
Then this is a test for me
And I’m gonna pass it fine

Get it out of your head
I’m out of the bed

In all of the ways that I’m wrong
And the times you won’t say
And all the debates that were lost
This is a test

We’ve been looking away for too long
If you don’t mind, i don’t mind
If this is a test for your needs
Then this is a test for me
And I’m gonna pass it fine
We were just passing time

This had to be one of those songs that just get instantly downloaded into your brain. James Taylor once said, "some songs just seem to write themselves. " This feels like it would be in that category. Beautifully written and wonderfully performed.

An ordinary morning in the life of a musical genius.

Kotzen is a genius!

The song seems to explore themes of personal growth, challenges, and acceptance of imperfections in relationships. The metaphor of the "spider’s web" suggests that life is woven with memories and choices, where each strand represents past experiences. The "test" mentioned repeatedly might symbolize the difficulties, conflicts, and trials a person faces in relationships, whether with themselves or others.

There is an acknowledgment of personal flaws ("in all the ways that I’m wrong") and unspoken moments in a relationship ("the times you won’t say"), reflecting a sense of resignation and acceptance. The idea of "looking away for too long" suggests that both the narrator and the other person may have been avoiding dealing with these issues directly.

The metaphor of "roses" blooming and then dying in an ice storm conveys cycles of beauty and loss, reinforcing the fleeting nature of good things in life. In the end, there’s a sense of liberation, with the narrator stating they are "out of the bed" and determined to "pass this test fine, " even if not everything is resolved.

Essentially, the song seems to speak about accepting the imperfections of life and relationships, viewing the difficulties as inevitable and transient tests.

One of my favorites on the new release/album/cd. Love that he's using his grandfather's (I think) guitar or the video.
