Mexico's president says no talk of tariffs during phone call with Trump

Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday that tariffs did not come up during a phone call with U.S. president-elect Donald Trump, but that migration – a topic that Trump says is behind his decision to impose tariffs – was a point of interest.

After their Wednesday phone call, Trump said Sheinbaum had “agreed to stop migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing the southern border.”

But Sheinbaum claims that instead, she laid out a strategy to attend to migrants before they reach the U.S. border.

Trump has threatened to impose a 25 per cent tariff on Mexico and Canada, which appears to contravene a free trade pact. According to data, Mexico and the U.S. are each others' top trade partners.
