On Tuesday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford reacted to U.S. president-elect Donald Trump's announcement of a proposed 25 per cent tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico, criticizing a comparison of the two countries.

"What I found unfair about the comments is to compare us to Mexico. And I can tell you, Canada is no Mexico," Ford said.

Ford and other Canadian premiers called for an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Trudeau to formulate a strategy to prepare for the new administration. Ford added that "We need to make sure that he has a strong plan to protect and secure our borders, and make sure we address the threat from the U.S."

"And I want to emphasize: To compare us to Mexico, this is the most insulting thing I've ever heard from our friends and closest allies," Ford said.

Doug, you have hurt Ontario. You up there insulting Mexico is despicable. Shame on you. This is not Canadian and you don't speak for me. I can hardly wait for the next provincial election so we can vote this fool out of office.

Apologies to Mexico. This guy doesn’t speak for Canadians

Ford is NOT speaking for all Canadians. As a Canadian, Mexico is my second home. The people of Mexico are honest, hardworking and very friendly. I've never had any problems in Mexico, in fact they're always ready to extend their hands to you. I am not a Mexican, but his words have insulted me. Mexico always welcomes Canadians with open arms. Canada will always have Mexico as their friend.

Wow this dude just disrespected me and 126 million of Mexicans? Who that hell he thinks he is? He doesn’t know Mexico 🇲🇽. Oh because he is white and speaks English thinks he is better? Why Canada has this dude representing or speaking for the entire country?

Dougie, have you forgotten that during Trump's first term he wanted to kick Canada out of the USMCA agreement and that it was the then Mexican president that advocated for Canada to remain in the deal. I think you need to pick better friends.

We, the Canadian citizens, demand an official apology to Mexico. Ford, you do not speak on my behalf. Your words are nothing but obtuse, ignorant rhetoric.

You may not be like Mexico, but the woman president in Mexico gave a better answer to Trump than yours...she showed more "cojones" than you.

So the response from Mexico was “if you impose tariffs, we’ll do the same”, and Ontario’s “please don’t call me that, I’ll do whatever you say, just tell me I’m better than anyone… “ is he a 3yo?? Is his aspiring dream to be a doormat or what?? I’m glad the majority of Canadians don’t think like him, jeez!

That's right Doguie. Two different countries. Mexico makes more cars than Canada and has a much more diversified economy. Mexico exports mostly manufactured products and Canada exports mostly commodities. Unions in Mexico don't make companies close down entire factories and relocate manufacturing operations to other countries they way Ontario unions do. Want examples: GM, Kellogg, Nestle. Ontario's problem is not Mexico, it's electing incompetent and poorly educated leaders who can't even fix the local economy and then pretend to know about world trade and foreign relations.

Dougie is almost in tears. Trump is gonna make Canada pay for our stupidity. Blaming the Mexicans isn't going to help.

As a Mexican hearing this from a Canadian official was not surprising but it was disappointing. Mexico advocated to allow Canada to stay in the USMCA by pressuring Trump or Mexico was not going to sign. Yet here we have a Canadian official insulting Mexico for no reason other than sucking up to Trump who already backstabbed Canada. Mexico expected to be betrayed by the US as they always do but Canada? after what mexico did for you, you turn around and ask Mexico to be removed from the agreement and then proceed to insult Mexico?

Ford seems to be more concerned about Mexico than the actual 25%tariffs, what about our Canadian economy? Carbon tax? Property taxes? Interest rates? Gasoline prices? Food prices? General cost of Canadian living????etc, etc, etc…
