The first story you talked about reminded me of the way most people with depression appear to others; alienating themselves, not being able to talk to people, always thinking about the bad things that have happened. Maybe Shinigami were a way for the Japanese to be able to understand depression. It seems like they personified the illness so it made more sense to them and made it feel like you can fight depression, even if you can't see it.

When I did my own research on them, I was surprised how little information existed even though you'd think death spirits would be more prominent in a country's mythology. Like you said, they remained rather vague for a long time. What's neat was that when Japan was introduced to the Western concept of Death (The entity), Japan started using Death's appearance for their shinigami, so what began as an undescribed or ghostly apparition slowly became a black-clad skeletal figure.

Do more reviews on Asian based deities. It's a very uncommon mythology that's not being covered a lot. Awesome review. 😁

Never let America do live action versions of anime & manga

It actually makes a lot of sense to me that death wouldn't be a single being, but multiple with their own personalities. Unlike other gods of natural forces like the sun or tides that work pretty much like clockwork, Death is much more varied and less predictable. Sometimes it's peaceful and painless, sometimes it's violent and horrific, and sometimes it's just plain weird or mysterious. Hell, sometimes it just doesn't care even though you totally should have died that one time. So it makes sense that individual shinigami with their own personalities would be responsible for the varying deaths of people.

I loved the shade thrown at the Netflix Death Note movie. It was wonderful!

And this video was great!

The story about the man with the spell to banish shimigami is very similar to one of the Grimms Fairy Tales called God father death, except the spell has been replaced by an herbal salve. Its funny how stories such as these have variations all across the globe. Love these videos!

I'm surprised to see Death Note mentioned and not Bleach since the MC is a shinigami ( I'm a bit bias though )

Please for the love of god watch the live action Japanese movies or just the anime. The Netflix movie was horrible. Straight up horrible.

There are other depictions of the Shinigami. Bleach has an entire society of them. And the main character of Rin-ne is a quarter Shinigami.
