In this example, we solve for the area of a circle when given the diameter. If you recall, the diameter is the length of a line that runs across the circle and through the center.

Geometry on Khan Academy: We are surrounded by space. And that space contains lots of things. And these things have shapes. In geometry we are concerned with the nature of these shapes, how we define them, and what they teach us about the world at large--from math to architecture to biology to astronomy (and everything in between). Learning geometry is about more than just taking your medicine ("It's good for you!"), it's at the core of everything that exists--including you. Having said all that, some of the specific topics we'll cover include angles, intersecting lines, right triangles, perimeter, area, volume, circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, analytic geometry, and geometric constructions. Wow. That's a lot. To summarize: it's difficult to imagine any area of math that is more widely used than geometry.

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything

Came here from google, I am fabricating a NASCAR style 'boomtube' exhaust pipe for my car, and I am going from a 2 inch diameter pipe to a much flatter square pipe, I needed to make sure I have equal exhaust flow between cylindrical and square pipe, but I didn't know how to find the area of a circle.
Thank you, Kahn Academy, for helping me mod my car. :)

Over a million views in less than 24 hours? And comments that are years old? I think khan has connections with the math Illuminati... 🤔🤣

Question: Is a 1/2-inch diameter (.5 inch) half the area of a 1-inch diameter (1.0 inch)? etc.
Asking for a friend :)

*Thanksgivings Math:* I have two pumpkin pies that are the same thickness. I want to cut them up so that each slice has the same mass (same surface area should work) while keeping the slices a reasonable portions. The answer for each pie should be an integer number of slices, meaning no odd parts left over. One pie is 12 inches, the other is 8 inches. For extra credit, include a 9 inch size.
