Let’s break down one of the greatest live performance moments of all time—Freddie Mercury at Live Aid in 1985.

We’ll analyze what made Queen’s frontman connect with a global audience of millions and why that day at Wembley Stadium remains one of the most iconic demonstrations of stage presence ever witnessed by an artist, musician, or stage performer.

This is the Stage Presence Mastery Series. My name is Luther Mallory. I’m an Artist Performance Coach out of Toronto, focused on teaching stage presence and expressive skills to artists and performers who want to master the craft of performance and audience connection.

My hope with this series is that artists, musicians, and stage performers can learn from legendary performers and apply these ideas to improve their own performances and deepen their connection with their audiences.

Subscribe for more breakdowns of world-class artists and performers, and feel free to suggest another legendary performance to analyze in the next video.

Freddie was artistic in nature; he had a vision and he was extremely creative. His unique stage presence, his spontaneous movements are so beautiful to watch. When you see Freddie, you see music. 🎶 🌠

I believe Queen was the only act appearing that day who rented a small thearter to rehearse the previous week. There is rehearsal footage on youtube. Watching that footage is an eye opener. Very different without the energy of the audience. Hard work and preparation ahead of time allowed the band to hit that stage with confidence. I love that you mentioned Freddie's unpredictability. The cameras rarely let him out of frame - as if afraid they'd miss something interesting or outrageous. 😃😍

When asked in an interview what was his favourite instrument? He replied the audience!
On the piano Freddie and the keys become one, all his emotions are on the surface.
An aside he was told not to perform that day because of a throat issues, but you could never hold him back.
Also he was very clear the critics had nothing to do with their success, the fan were the ones who made them, it was to them the love went
Thank you for an interesting time x

Freddie was suffering from a severe throat infection and was advised by doctors not to perform but did it against doctors orders. He did an outstanding job, as did the rest of the band. ❤

Thank you, Luther, for breaking down Freddie Mercury, he absolutely slayed! 👑
I also love how much you enjoyed making this video :)
I feel that singing and performing allows you to open up completely, to the point where the vulnerability that comes with it gives you the freedom to truly be yourself, embracing your own energy without room for judgment.
Bravo for your insights! 👏

When Freddie had fun the audience had fun. You could believe every single word Freddie sang and he sang to you not at you. He involved you. He was just so comfortable on the stage. Roger Taylor asked him if he was feeling nervous before this concert and he replied 'No, darling, I was born for this!' He was a legend. I have to disagree a bit about the motorbike moment, he is using his voice to mimic the noise of a motorbike - a very conscious use of his voice. Earlier in the song he was giving a nod to Elvis and mimicking his style as the song was a tribute to him. He knew what he was doing. Brian May said that when they did a concert, they knew what they were going to play and in what order. Other than that, Freddie just did whatever he felt like on the night!

Freddie wasn't just mumbling on Crazy Little Thing Called Love, he was trying to sound like Elvis. Also none of this was spontaneous; they rehearsed for a week and had the timing down to the second.

I'm a filmmaker, however for some reason I am obsessed with the art of live performance and the profound impact it can have on people. Currently, one year into learning my first instrument (guitar), so we'll see what happens.

I'd love to see you do a breakdown on Tyler The Creator.

He's having a good time and including the audience in that. End of.

Mercury's prancing about and grimaces were truly cringe worthy. Thank goodness other performers do not try to imitate him.
