What I found fixed the crashing was I made sure I had a page file setup on my Windows PC. I had page files turned off and I guess once I would run out of RAM, After Effects didn't know where to offload the data. It would give me a low memory error, and either crash, or refuse to preview the timeline. You'll want to use a decent size SSD for your page file. I'm using my 1TB NVMe SSD that also contains my OS and After Effects, but I haven't seen any issues with that. Basically, a page file is used once you have maxed out your RAM. I've heard no one talk about this and I hope that it will solve someone else's problem as well.

idk if he said this (i havent finished the video) but this helped me!
-go to file explorer
-add a new file to "local disk (C:)"
-name it Adobe or anything
-move all your files connected to After Effects, and or any adobe app, including plug-ins, projects that are being made, etc.
-delete all finished, unused, unimportant files.
and you should have more space in your pc, and it should help you not have ae crash, apologies if it doesn't work.
