Points per yard should be the number we are looking at. That covers efficiency

The goal has been to qualify for a bowl game. That goal has not changed. But the stretch goal of a better bowl game (8-4 season) has suddenly become much more realistic.

I was at 7-5 weak bowl game vs PAC 12 team before the season but now with the unexpected win now I'm at 8-4 decent bowl vs BIG10

The other stat to look at is the percentage of 'available yards' the offense gains. If the offense starts it's position on their 25 yard line, the available yards on that drive is 75. If they start from the opponent's 40, the available yards on that drive is 40. Against Arkansas, BYU gained about 34% of the yards available to them. Arkansas gained about the same percentage of available yards against BYU. So, why the discrepancy in total yards between the two teams? Arkansas had about 125 yards in penalties. Most of those penalties were on offense. So, about 100 yards of the Hogs' total offense simply overcame their penalties. Overcoming penalties helps with the total yards stat, but does nothing for the available yards stat.

Great job as usual, guys! Thanks for the yards per point stat.

In evaluating the offense and yards per carry consider these stats…

- Sam Houston has only allowed 28 points through week 4. (14 of those were BYU in week 1 with a ton of penalties from miscues.)

- Southern Utah obnoxiously stacked the box.

- Arkansas’ defense was ranked 7th going into week 3 against BYU with what is one of the best defensive lines in FBS.

- Kansas lost last December to Arkansas 53 - 55. They have had a less than stellar defensive performance through week 3. And not the same caliber defensive line.

BYU will show offensive improvement this week not just from adjustments. We’ll see a lot more yards per carry this week not just because BYU is going to improve week to week but because there is a regression to the mean happening as BYU faces these other teams (with the exception of Texas and OU.)

Jarom is it fair to say our punter is elite?

I think we win at least 3 vs Cincinnati, Iowa state, Oklahoma state, and West Virginia. And I bet we steal at least one vs the other teams. Probably 7 wins, we could realistically steal an 8th.

I have come to mistrust ESPN metrics. It has become obvious to me over the past 8 to 10 years that ESPN has codified historical, regional bias into their metrics which makes their analysis to get further and further from rationality each successive year.

Changed nothing for my expectations. How are we back to this stupid conversation after 3 games again... I expected them to be 3-2 after five games. After the first five then we can re-evaluate. Again BYU media is about to inflate the egos of BYU fans and players. When we we learn to take it game by game.

BYU is on a 3 game ROLL, defeating a P5 SEC program and still having a lot to fix is a huge plus. Staying humble is easy because you still are making the same mistake 3 games in a row, illegal touching?*#@! Missing chip blocks, getting beat deep, mental mistakes with goofball trick kicking shizzz.

Ok, this is going to be a 9-win season or more, if they continue to morphe into better play week to week game by game. We all know what October 2022 looked like. I am worried about October, it is going to determine this season.
