often when people don't really know much about spinal cord injury they often assume that only our legs are paralyzed however this isn't the case and most if not all spinal patients have bladder issues in this video I hope to address this and to give some explanation to why there are some things that more inconvenient for a disabled person than just not being able to walk. how to talk about how different people use different methods to help themselves to urinate and some of my own stories to help bring a likeness to the situation.

I'm 38 and have Spina Bifida. I intermittently self catheterise. I try to think of it in terms of just a problem caused by nerves and it's not our fault because we can't control it. People wouldn't be so judgemental about someone not being able to control another function higher up in the body. I've felt more comfortable explaining this issue to people as I've got older. Mature and understanding people will be accepting of the problem. I might ask my boyfriend if he can start wetting himself to make me feel better about myself 🤣

I'm 32 and still wet the bed. I wear a condom cath and yeah nothing is foolproof but it does minimise the risk. I wear pull ups that also help, at least with the external visibility at least

I am 41 and I had a weak bladder neck so I had to get a bladder sling put in, but sometimes I still have accidents. I try to never judge other people cause it can literally happen to anyone. I’m not para but I do use a wheelchair due to some issues I’m having. I recently lost feeling in my spine and my legs and it was while walking, I fell down. I fell again later that day. Not fun.

Got a thousand stories. Can realate sitting under the hand dryer in rest rooms. Specially in my young party years
I'm over 50 now, been an ncomplete para since age 18 nd have been fortunate that I got to a level of just having to percuss(think thats the right word) to pee. Catherterizing period was a nightmare.

My wife who I met in my 40's made me start using old timers nappies. Because I'm very active and often in situations where I have strain my body to move about for example pulling myself up a set of stairs or picking up something heavy, a little pee may come out. So I cut a nappy n half and wear that 80% of the time. It saves any worry of when we are out n about and that moment comes and ya gotta pee and a toilet is not handy, it has saved me wetting my clothing many times, specially travelling in Asia.

It's an embarassing subject but true friends and loved ones are always suoportive I've found and yes, the best medicine is laughter.

Thanks for your openness. To me it's the worst part of having a spinal injury.

Oh the world of SCI that people truly have no idea about! Ps when’s your birthday because we’re the same age since you said you’re 29 too so you must be a 1990 baby! My birthday is October 3, 1990!

I have the opposite problem. My bladder will fill and fill until I get AD and the catheter will not go in due to the bladder spasming. I started taking myrbetriq and my bladder relaxed. I can now hold upwards to 600-700ml where as before I could hold 350ish although I try not to let it get that much. I wonder why some people have problems holding urine and others like myself have trouble letting it go.
