YouTube forcing users to turn on Watch History feels like an invasion of privacy. I'm a software developer, and I have medium-high tolerance for this sort of stuff, but this feels like a step too far.

I've had my watch and search history turned off for YEARS now. It helps tremendously weed out all the garbage that I don't want to see/watch. It's not perfect BUT it does help cut down the amount of garbage YT wants me to see that I just don't care for

Not only is this a bad move, but this basically kills any hope for new/small channels to grow.

Jokes on youtube, I have ZERO intention of turning my watch history back on.

All they’ve done is prevent me from easily finding new content on the home page, which will only negatively affect them! 😂

Home page should just include subscriptions and trending (without being based on history), or at the very least make subscriptions the home page. Having an empty home page basically saying "this is your fault, fix it now" is such a disgusting trick, to the point where making a different page your "home" page is the solution. Foul move.

The irony is that YouTube doesn't need your authorization to check your every move. They're already doing it anyway, regardless of your settings. They're only trying to force you into giving them your authorization to do so. Which means only one thing: they're up to no good and they know it.

I refuse to let them make me turn my watch history on. Although I don't think to watch history actually has anything because I still get ads based on what I watch in other apps and YouTube. Digital privacy is a scam, they just make you think you have privacy.

At first I was outraged now I’m actually seeing this as a great opportunity to only watch content I’m subscribed to. I will miss finding new content but that means less time waisted on social media so it’s all good. YouTube is going to lose a lot of traffic from this move.

This is awful, I use to find some great people I would end up subbing to from the homepage. I swear YouTube (and Twitch) are trying everything they can to kill off their platforms.

Well, your take is actually fair.
Want to watch trending videos? - check trend
Want to watch related videos - check right-side column.
Want to watch specific topic - use search bar.
Basically they shoot themselves in the foot by this change, since now they have even LESS ways to shove some unwanted content down your throat.

I don’t use most Google services that much, but YouTube is one that I do. This change really shows what kind of a company Google is, one that cares not for the user experience, but rather the user data. Google now only exists for people to give up their data privacy in exchange for “free” services.

This update is so stupid, especially for us small creators who are willing to be successful youtubers. Thanks to this update, my homepage is empty and my chances of uploading a viral video have dropped significantly.

I only got it today but I immediately felt how scummy it is, and OF COURSE shorts works perfectly fine :/
