Yes viruses or any infections can be scary, but being aware of their influence in the ecosystem and understanding how they spread/act is very important. This just blew my mind. I knew we had ERVs, but I thought their DNA was inactive. However, when it comes to modern infectious viruses, I'm worried not because they are some alien invader, but because they are infectious. The ERVs that became part of us are effectively failed viruses, and having become part of our genome, their survival becomes wrapped up in ours. They are no longer separate organisms. Modern viruses very much are and have survival goals contrary to our own. Quite a big difference, and while it isn't a reason to panic, it's definitely a reason to take precautions against infection.

Corona virus is a concern. 60% of population will experience symptoms, 12 - 17% will have symptoms bad enough for hospitalization, 4% - 9% will have to be in ICU, 1% will die in healthy medical establishment, and up to 10% could die in overburdened system.
