As someone who worked on a flight deck, nobody on that deck would know or care what Maverick just did. All they know is they launched F-18’s recovered some of the F-18s and somehow an F-14 showed up too.

So my dad was stationed at pendleton during filming. The stories about Tom crisue trying to get into the officer's lounge were always hilarious. Apparently the military guys loved telling him no, he's not an actual service member and no he can't go in there.

The carrier deck party in the first movie (and indeed a great deal of the movie itself) is based on the Gulf of Sidra incident, in which two Tomcats shot down two Libyan Su-22s. When they returned to their carrier, they were greeted with cheers from the flight deck crew more or less just like in Top Gun. So it seems absurd, but it did actually happen.

The helmet while riding a motorcycle is so spot on. Gloves, high top shoes/boots, long pants, and a jacket with reflective tape/colors are also mandatory for many a military base.

Finally, another one of these, and with my favorite guest!

As someone who was an aviator in the Air Force flying SpecOPS missions nearly exclusively (some PSYOPS), It's SUPER WEIRD that he was a Judge Advocate and THEN became a JTAC. Literally never heard of anyone doing that before, so he's not overexaggerating when he says he had a convoluted military experience.

The FA18F Super Hornets are 2 seat variants, and the EA18 Growler is also a 2 seat variant.

4:45 there actually is someone who survived a plane breaking up at Mach 3; in the SR-71 in 1966, Bill Weaver survived the plane breaking up at Mach 3 up at 79, 000 ft altitude.

Some planes (like f-111, b-58, xb-70) have entire ejection capsules instead of just the seat. The first two space shuttles (enterprise and columbia) also had two ejection seats for the pilot and commander, but later shuttles didn't have them because there was no way to fit the ejection system for crews of 3 or more.

As a Naval Officer I wanted to comment about Maverick's rank.

So I have asked and been told that there are in fact O6 (Captain) Pilots who still keep up with their flight hours and still fly. With that being said I think the bigger issue and reason Maverick isn't an Admiral is because he's probably not "leading" people. Officers in the military are expected to lead first and foremost and if you're not demonstrating you can lead a large number of people why on earth would the military make you an Admirals who are in charge of running HUGE areas of operations. Also news flash, but Admirals do not go personally on missions.

The movie's use of Admirals and Captains in this film is just weird in general. Admirals (The fact the movie has two is even funnier) would not be this involved in planning a single mission. Sure they would be tracking it, but a single admiral would be in charge of EVERY single mission in the Middle East. So every ship assigned to support the squadron, the bases that would support the ships, all aircraft etc. A Captain, aka Maverick, would be the one personally planning and running the mission and an O4 or O5 would be the instructor. Because again O6s are normally commanding entire bases/ships or working in direct support of admirals and if they want to be promoted they have to demonstrate they can do that job well. Maverick should be the Commanding Officer of that testing base at the beginning of the movie, and the CO would never personally test an aircraft because what would you do if they got hurt? Like imagine the President leading a Seal Team on a spec ops mission, there's a reason they don't do that.

Maverick as an O6, being assigned as an instructor, would ironically be considered an insult. He's only in charge of and leading 12 people and while the mission might be important, in the grand scheme of military leadership, leading 12 people and only being in charge of one mission is NOT very impressive for an O6. Like, it's the sort of thing you assign someone to do if you don't think they're good at their job and want to keep them out of trouble.

I can't get over the exchange of:
"What were you thinking?"
"You told me not to think!"

I'm just imagining Maverick's pure annoyance at Rooster actually listening to his advice for the first time in a while, and it's at probably the best and worst time for Rooster to do so.

Not really mentioned but 2 things I found from the opening sequence that bugged me. 1 That officer who parked and got out of his car at the runway threshold, absolutely has hearing loss and other injuries from the pressure wave of a jet aircraft taking off directly over his head.
And 2: WHY for the love of god ifls there a guard hut on a runway threshold!?! Not only are the guards in there getting permanent hearing damage from that position, but why is the guard hut built there when I'm pretty sure it's illegal anywhere to have a building in the threshold to a runway in case an airplane has to abort takeoff and overshoots?

As an army vet, I don’t see the military doing this insane mission to fly through a valley and to send a missile through an air duct or whatever it is. Reason 1: it’s an unnecessary risk to life and military equipment. Reason 2: we have drones, they could fly a predator and send a missile. Reason 3: our missiles are time delayed this isn’t ww2. modern missiles can penetrate into the ground before exploding. Reason 4: that is a massive amount of radioactive material that will need to be contained they’re not just going to blow up uranium or whatever the heck it is and just be leave it alone. Ground troops are going to have to go in afterwards to contain the radioactive materials. So this entire mission drives me absolutely insane.

I love this video, and when these to do videos together, they’re pretty good, hilarious duo, and they bounce off each other’s punchlines pretty well. I would like to see more videos with the both of them.

My theory for Maverick surviving the Mach 10 ejection was that the plane had a similar ejection system to the F111, where the whole cockpit was seperated. I'd imagine the cockpit had heat shielding similar to atmospheric re entry craft too

For some reason "All things are possible in the militarily..." sounds very funny to me. It implies a lot of confusing and illogical things occur, and no one questions them when they do.
