I prefer your method
You apply extremely little pressure to the braid. I've seen other's apply quite a fair amount more of pressure. Always wondered if that would affect/scour the pads

Be careful with hot air gun, If it is directed at just one point continuously at high temperatures it will cause the PCB to overheat and swell

For someone who has a level 3 solder cert I’d never use metal and I’d use a long strand of solder wick too suck that up metal can risk damaging the board

I bought a new soldering iron but think I might have gotten too low of wattage. It is only 18 watts.
Have you ever used one that low of wattage?
