I think his ability to be consistently inconsistent in the playoffs is what is polarising. We all know he's gonna drop two bombs and two stinkers in these finals.

This dude is so frustrating. We know he has IT. Ex: Game 6 vs Mil, Game 7 vs Philly. Dude needs someone to unlock that DOG

I think a big part of it is Jaylen Brown. The fact that they play a similar way, similar role, and they aren’t that far off from each other in terms of production. JT is better, but not by enough that it would be comparable to the other best players in the league and their costar.

Example: Jokic to Murray. Giannis to Middleton/Dame now. Luka to Kyrie. SGA to JWill.

So there’s always gonna be some lack of clarity as to who is responsible for their success. Obviously the answer is both, but we’re talking about perception, and that can make it seem like neither of them are as good as they really are.

It’s kinda funny because it’s like just because both of these guys are really good and have tons of success, it makes them both seem less good individually, and where neither of them are “that guy”. But if you were to put either of them on some of these 15-9 seed teams, on their own, they would probably both be good enough to be the guy and people would talk about them very differently.

JT and the core Celtics have been "ahead of schedule." His hate is due to viewer fatigue

He does not have a signature style or all-time skillset. He is not a great passer like Jokic or Luka, not a great back to basket scorer like Embiid, not a great shooter like Curry, not a great paint scorer like Giannis, not a great mid range scorer like SGA. But he is elite (or almost elite) at every facet of the game. He is even clutch at certain moments. And a pretty good defender as well. But nothing of him stands out; plus playing with someone who is basically a lite (or upgraded sometimes) version of him does not help. But that does not take away the fact that he is still a top 5-10 player currently in the NBA. Not a lot of players right now are elite on both sides of the court like him.

Jayson Tatum is Paul George with 24 inch rims. Also, he looks like a lightskinned Benny the Butcher.

JT has been so ahead of schedule that, now that he’s on time, people act like he’s late.

I honestly agree with what you said. It’s just frustrating as a Celtics fan watching him play cause his inconsistency is what makes people question him.

I will agree that he is over hated especially by nba fans. But he is perfectly rated imo currently he is top 4-7 there is no argument for him being higher than Jokic Giannis or Luka

Tatum hate is strong right now he either wins and gets his respect, or loses and the narrative is on his BUTT

I'd just like to say that while JT has more NBA playoffs experience, Luka has been playing professionally since he was 16 so I'd say Luka has more experience in general

I feel like one of the big reasons is that he’s not a very “polarizing” player. He doesn’t have some superpower that everyone raves about (Jokic passing) or some glaring weakness (Luka defense, Giannis shooting), he’s just very very very good at everything - great defender, great shooter, great isolation player, but not necessarily “best in the world” at anything. Because of that, media talking heads won’t cover him as much and people overall have weaker opinions about him.

I think one of the reasons he’s so heavily discussed is because he has all of these accolades. People look at the resume and age and assume he’s top five. But he’s always had a great team around him. And then when it comes time to make all nba teams they’ll say he’s the best player on the best team. How can he not make it right? Jaylen brown winning the ecf mvp over him was the icing on top for me. He’s a great player. Top 6-10 in the league probably. But he doesn’t get the accolades he gets if he isn’t in Boston.

Swishout talking about Jayson Tatum I had to watch it

Tatum is great but he’s been in a great situation his whole career Boston has consistently added great players to the roster given the Jays the best opportunities to go win it all but every year Tatum has moments where he doesn’t look or play like the best player on the floor because of his inconsistencies. Other teams with great players need their guy to be great where Boston can win even when he plays bad and it goes to show how stacked the roster has been for him and he still hasn’t won.

Here's how I can describe it: A superstar "talent" gifted to be successful is the likes of a curry, bron, mj, kobe, etc. But often doesn't play like it, and even if successful, may get dismissed in the vain of tim duncan (team success arguments, no back to back arguments, never the best in the world arguments)

Unfortunately to his detriment in THIS conversation, he has always had the benefit of
A. Being on a good team
B. Having a running mate who is as good or maybe even better at certain times.
He's a great young talent in the league, a jack of all trades. But the league right now is full of athletic beasts like giannis, embiid or basketball geniuses like Luka and Jokic. Winning solves alot but if he isnt the best player on the celtics in these finals the debate will continue.

As someone who understands that the Celtics are probably going to win at 6 or 7, I think that the issue that people have is that who are the people who hate on JT wanted it to be storybook. Luka has the storybook pace, but part of it will be losing to Boston when his supporting cast lets him down
