Throttle body and throttle position switch replacement, P0120 Volvo 850, S70, V70 - VOTD

Throttle body replacement: 30 to 60 minutes ($40 / $120 / $480)

The spring on this throttle body broke and made the car give an error code for the throttle position switch, so I replaced it. This should be the same procedure on many Volvo cars but especially on the 1993 - 1998 Volvo 850, S70, V70, XC70, etc.

Hi Robert, it was an impossible task to take the two screws off the TPS. You said the screws are 7mm. But I tried a 7mm socket -- too big. I tried a 6.5mm -- too small. They are a beast to remove! To make then easier to remove, I took the TB off first so I could hold onto the TB and try to remove the TPS bolts. An auto mechanic friend helped me out.

Hi Robert, after all were done, the car ran smoothly... for about 20 miles and... then without warning, slowed to 10 mph with zero power. Immediately, I suspected a loose linkage of the throttle body (at 4:15 of your video). As suspected. it had popped off. The car limped back to my driveway. I have not been able to pop it back in. Any suggestion?

To do a throttle body cleaning, should I remove the throttle body? If so, would I need a new mounting gasket?

Hi Robert. Just wanted to let you know that I've been watching so many of your videos while I track down problems and solve them on my friend's 850 sedan. Really helpful and greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

Hi Robert i want to ask.
I have volvo 940 turbo, and my problem is how much voltage input to tps?
Because i see many video say about the voltage is 5v .
But i test in my car the voltage show 12v? This normal or not for volvo 940 turbo LH 2.4 bosch?

Thankyou

Hey Robert, thank you as always for your shared knowledge! Just got an 02 s60 nonturbo. Ran great till I tried to go over 15mph - then no power whatsoever. Told I needed a new throttle body (including sensor). Watched this vid, then bought new one off ebay. Arrived and was wrong part, so I cleaned the old one, with neg off battery. Put neg back on after cleaning and it revved high momentarily, then went back to rough idle, and unable to rev over 2.7k rpm. Do I need to "reprogram" or "sync" somehow? Someone suggested I take neg off batt again, disconnect TB connector, reconnect, put neg back on, put key in and turn to 1, leave for 20 minutes, then start. Sounds crazy but before I do that I thought I should ask you!

Robert, thank you so much for your videos.

I just replaced the TPS with a new one and the vehicle didn't start afterwards. All lights on the dashboard turn on and when I turn the key it just clicks. I put the old TPS on and it does the same.

What do you think is going on?

Hi Robert, Can a bad throttle position switch and/or a dirty throttle body cause a rough idle? I'm experiencing this issue with my 1998 C70 2.5 low pressure turbo. I just replaced the spark plugs with original volvo ones, the spark plug wires (bougicord), the cap, the rotor and the ignition coil. Also replaced the fuel filter and the injectors. Thanks in advance

Hi Robert, I am having all the symptoms of what seems to be a dirty throttle body on my 98 s70 (non turbo).. I told this to my mechanic and he said hes never had that cause an issue on the 98s. I swear that I got the code p10120 at auto zone but his volvo scanner came up with just familiar vaccum leak code and 02 sensor. . Car runs perfect most of the time, and then other times I have inconsistent (slow) acceleration and the accelerator seems heavy. Any thoughts before I have it cleaned for nothing?  Thanks in advance

Before I replace my throttle position sensor I would prefer to test it. How do you test it? (1993 850 non-turbo)

Robert is the Throttle Body return spring replaceable? If so, do you know a source for it?

How come the throttle body you took off the car doesn't have the restrictive plastic piece on the plate? I just bought a 960 tb assuming mine had one...and if it doesn't I'm going to by slightly pissed...

Hi Robert- I stopped in a shop today to see how much a throttle body cleaning would be, expecting him to take it off and clean it but he said he "Would use a product in the intake that would clean everything". I didn't ask if it was seafoam, but I am curious on your thoughts on using Seafoam and products that market themselves to clean fuel system out? (other than lucas injector cleaner which i know you recommend.
Thank you. The car is a 940 wagon 1993
