Dental school with a low GPA? It's possible! In this video, I talk about how I bounced back from a low GPA and ultimately got into 3 dental schools! Although it isn't easy, I think that if you truly want to become a dentist, you will do what you need to get there.

I smurfed my way into dental school as well. 3.42 GPA I even had C's in upper-level courses as well as two W's on my transcript. My DAT (superscore) was 19AA & 22PAT. A superscore takes the highest score you got out of all of your attempts at the DAT and puts those together for those of you who don't know what that is.

Inspiring video Jack! I can so relate with you with the upward trend GPA after surviving that transition period. I remember failing a test my first semester freshman year and getting a final grade of C in a class sophomore year and still finishing with a cumulative of over 3.5 pre-med. Even though my passions changed slightly, I loved how you talked about ways to show the admissions committee you really want it and how you worked so hard to change things around. Awesome job :)

haha definitely realized that studying for college was a lot different than studying in high school late too! My first semester sophomore year I got a 2.91 (oops) but you're right, the upward trend is key!

Below 3.0 is considered a bad GPA. Some places consider anything below a 3.5 to be poor. But, the majority of people get below a 3.0 and the super majority of people get below a 3.5. So, does that mean the majority and super majority of graduates from university and even in the most challenging majors are stupid, poor students, or didn't get value out of the school? Something is very wrong. The only places where the majority get a good GPA are from expensive private schools that don't publish their data on grade distributions.

Also, getting a high GPA just shows that you are a mindless follower willing to obey and do something that has no value for your education or career preparation, because that is what academic degrees are all about. It is a prestige competition, nothing more. A test to see how much bullshit you are willing to put yourself through because you either don't know it is bullshit, or you are willing to do it anyway.

Also, almost all medical schools grade on pass/fail and medical schools are professional schools, not academic schools. That is a bit ironic given they claim to care about GPA so much for admission.

Things are a little different in the UK. About 80% graduate with a 1st class or 2:1, which would be equivalent to a good GPA of a 3.0 or above in the US. This is approximately double the rate of the US. Their medical schools also don't require an undergraduate degree. I also don't think there is the need for a 1st class in the UK in the same way there may be a need for a 3.5 or above in the US to get into certain things, but I'm not an expert on that.

I also suggest we get rid of academic degrees and replace them with professional degrees.

I literally don’t come out of my room because I study so much 😔 my dream is to become a dentist and sometimes the fact that I’m not smart enough creeps into my mind! English is my second language too

I commend your vulnerability in this video! I struggled with a low gpa in undergrad and am now in a master's program where I've learned to refine my studying methods :). I hope that I'll also get the chance to attend UCSF.

Hi Jack! Are you considered an international student? Similar to you, I was born outside of the US and moved to CA when I was pretty young but I dont have citizenship in the US. Do you think this hindered your journey to dental school?
