We’ve spotted Tesla Model 3s with unique camera setups—could they be testing for the Robotaxi? Plus, Tesla is reworking its Buffalo factory deal to add a Dojo Supercomputer, with New York offering better terms. Tesla also topped JD Power's 2024 EV charging satisfaction survey. Lastly, Polestar, partly owned by Geely, is now building its Polestar 3 in South Carolina to dodge US tariffs.

Another explanation for the camera placement would be that it's for a competitor's vehicle, who is considering an FSD licensing deal. They would want to consider how camera placements and FSD training would work for their vehicle, but before the deal is official only Tesla could openly try that out.

I have a Model 3 and have JUST used 2 chargepoint chargers this weekend. I found that you DO NOT need the app. Both the chargers had the option to skip it. If you simply tap a credit card, plug the vehicle in, you're charging. I can't speak for the other brands, but this weekend I proved chargepoint can get started pretty quick.

@herbert - keep in mind Polestar & Volvo are sold very CHEAP in Chyna.
Polestar 2 is only $29, 000, the USA sells same car for $50, 000 or more.
DONT expect any deep discounts from Volvo/Polestar in the USA.
Geely makes way less Vehicles than BYD & Tesla in Chyna .

I rented a Polestar 2 for a week last December. Very nice car. Charging experience was great due to the free charging where we stayed. No competition for the charger.

8:10 500 MW or half a GW, not kW. Will need substantial grid connection upgrade - likely planned for.
Obviously, cooling needs to match that & even with COP 3:1 & evaporative cooling, it’s a lot of power.

The camera layout is for a coupe or 2 door vehicle. Perfectly explains the positioning of the camera behind longer doors.

The inset rear-side camera may be to simulate a teardrop (more aerodynamic) shape that’s narrower towards the rear.

This is so they can have Robotaxi FSD fully trained and ready to go on day one. Seems obvious to me. No waiting like for the Cybertruck.

The discovery of the car in the wild could be standard research experimentation to fine tune the best placement for the cameras with any/all future Tesla vehicles. It might be nothing more.

From rough memory: Polestar started as a racing team using Volvo cars and morphed into their own brand under Volvo. Then Geely that owns Volvo recently took over the brand. Geely is Chinese, Volvo and Polestar are Swedish, if you count headquarter location. If you count headquarter of the company owning majority of the brand, that makes them Chinese, Lamborghini German and Dodge Dutch. So what are you going to do? Blood sample to get the ethnicity of all shareholders? Assigning a country to multinational companies owning each other gets silly quickly. I own parts of Tesla, and I am not American, Chinese or German at all.

Maybe they are testing new camera’s to sell to other auto manufacturers after licensing FSD. They might be developing a package of their technology including computer and cameras. That would entice other OEM’s

Can totally confirm what Brian is saying about charging in Europe. It's a mess. Great potential for improvement.

It's just the the camera setup for some other vehicle. Could be any other vehicle. Maybe even a van. Anything.

In regard to charging in Europe, UK specifically, I can confirm unequivocally that anything none Tesla supercharger or home charging is a pain.
You'll need a specific app for the charging station (I have 6 installed), with podpoint you pull up, park at the station, then have to open the app, tell it which location your at and which actual charger you want to use (each one has a silly name), select it and it charges your card a minimum of £40 straight away. It then unlocks the charger for you to use.
Then, a few days later if you didn't use the full £40 of charge, it is kindly returned to your account.

It's a mess.

Luckily I got the 15, 000 miles free supercharger miles with my model 3 highland and there's a supercharger station just slightly off my route to the gym, so I either charge at home or there (or other superchargers if I'm traveling).
They (the other charger companies) really need to get their crap together, and hopefully Tesla will keep adding theirs .

@Herbert - Geely bought VOLVO, which Polestar is a part.
Polestar was the PERFORMANCE arm of Volvo.
now Geely makes the all performance Polestar models, same platform as Volvo.

Alaska is part of America, last I looked. No superchargers in Anchorage. I live in an apartment and drive for Uber, so I would love a Tesla. No place to charge every day unless I want to drive 40 miles round trip.

My tesla highland crashes into objects front and back when at slow speeds or on take off. Tesla we need a refreshed version of software to improve the standard safety features.

Polestar 2 is a Volvo and shared the same platform. New polestars are shared geely platforms. Please Brian don’t just say things when you don’t know!

I’m thinking the big rear camera might be a passenger view camera? To verify the Robotaxi experience during testing.
