How do you use mini roundabouts?

I go when the roundabout is clear to do so, regardless of whether traffic is approaching from the right or not. You only have to give way to the right if they're on the roundabout first, otherwise you'd be sitting there all day whilst the cars travel all the way down the road. The give way markings are there to say 'give way to people on the roundabout' not 'give way to people on a separate stretch of road to you'. If you are on the roundabout first then it's your right of way.

At 3:45 - those white vans weren't giving way even though you were already on the roundabout.  What a surprise!

Good examples Gaz, you should of also said about when using a Mini-roundabout to try and go around them rather than over them, that's what my driving instructor had always said to me when I was learning to drive

Use them exactly as you demonstrate. In St Andrews there's quite a few of them, a lot with zebra crossings on the exits so it can test your forward planning skills. One of the roundabouts I used frequently had one of its exits obscured by a building, so coming to a crawl, even if there was no hint of traffic is a good idea.

Two of the videos on my channel feature incidents I've encountered on mini roundabouts, I had thought from the criticism I received that I was doing something wrong (I approach and use them the same as you), I'm glad to learn this clearly isn't the case and that mini roundabouts are treated very differently.

Thanks for the tips. Although London traffic was somewhat aggressive, I found it quite civilized, even in central London at rush hour.
Sadly, I was unable to make my planned ride to Brighton, but it was a heck of an experience all the same.

Can't say I really distinguish between the two but always giveway to the right and enter with caution.

Great vid Gaz Always make eye contact with as many drivers as you can in these situation assume they haven't seen you.

Yes, spot on. Whilst vehicles from junctions that are on your left on roundabouts should give way to you, defensive driving says always expect that they may not! It's the same for all, from mini, to large three lane ones.

I find larger ones people are more likely to 'chance it' across in-front of you because their approach speed is usually higher.

As said mini roundabouts are, for most road users, the same as any other roundabout in that you must wait if your actions would cause a road user on the right to take action to avoid you, only different for mini roundabouts is if your vehicle is too big to go around the roundabout you may go over it, although I still tend to go as much around as possible which is tough when you drive something the size of a transit! ;)

This is how I use roundabouts whether in 2 wheels or 4, powered or not.
What's interesting/worrying is, apart from those that cut in first, in recent years many people bring their European driving rules with them, where it's stated to give way to traffic to the right even though they drive on the right. i.e. Vehicles entering the roundabout have priority ahead of you. This results in queues on roundabouts and is a flawed system IMO. More to the point, it's the exact opposite logic that we employ here

Depends imo. If it's a mini roundabout, then you must give way to traffic approaching from the right, as is seen in the above video.

Despite some of the criticism that you get on your videos, I absolutely love them! I feel like you make the right calls while biking in the streets and that you know exactly what you're doing!
I was wondering, could you maybe do a sort of "set-up" video or something? I just wanted to see what kind of bike & equipment that you use.
Either way, love the videos and keep doing what you're doing!

Just the same. I have a double mini roundabout at the bottom of my hill, I find myself being extra cautious with traffic on the left it only takes one person to do me in. I indicate my intentions to turn off before the roundabout if possible so I have full control around.

I should add you basically are completely right I do roundabouts like you cars drivers should do the same, assess your speed and not proceed if they will come close to you likely if you are doing 20+ and they have hesitated.

Hi Gaz ! Mini roundabouts, like large roundabouts, are just `JUNCTIONS` no matter who says what. You `have` to give way to traffic coming from your right, (if you are turning right) as you would at say, a T-junction ! The only difference with a mini roundabout is that it`s a junction designed to help traffic flow better and `all` traffic gives way to vehicles on their right as a rule but this relies on observance of that rule by all users. sadly, not all do hence accidents, near misses etc

Exactly like this, but you don't have an example of the scenario which causes the most conflict - turning right across oncoming traffic.

Even though on a mini-roundabout the person turning right has priority, I usually expect to stop, as I have to cease indicating to brake and steer. Oncoming traffic sometimes misses the turn signal or with goldfish-like memory forgets once you're on the roundabout, leading to conflict as you cross their exit/entry.

More or less like this, but if a car is approaching from the right and I can proceed without impeding them, I'll go. Same with larger roundabouts, where it's not always a case of giving way to traffic, but finding a gap to move into. But I'm also watching the other entry points, for cars approaching which will prevent the cars to my right moving onto the roundabout, anticipating a gap appearing.

I use them like you just did in the video. I always slow on approach and look before I make any move.

I always give way to traffic on the right, even if I could arguably squeeze in. Those fees times in he videos where the cars could have done that to you would have potentially caused you to need to break hard given your speed. I think that is where the skill is, not just seeing the other traffic but judging how quickly it is moving and whether they could reasonably slow if needed
