What is a Heresy?

Today, it's quite common to hear someone use the word "heresy" or to call someone a "heretic." Unfortunately, more times than not, these words are often misunderstood. So, what is a heresy, and why should we be careful using it?

The current usage is often to denigrate a fellow Catholic with whom one disagrees about a theological matter. This violates the basic tenets of Christianity.

Thanks buddy you cleared it in such a simple way that I understood every bit of it. Now I'm more clear about what Heresy is all about. Actually I was after establishing the difference between Dissent and Heresy and now I've come to know that dissent is somehow very meager in nature as compared to Heresy. Heresy is such a serious charge or allegation against any body.

Hey… non-Catholic here. Can you show me where in the Bible it says that certain sins are unforgivable? For it is written “I tell you the truth. All sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin” (Mark 3:28-29).

I argue that only blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is unforgivable. Bible says it plain as day. So why does the Catholic Church claim that Protestantism of any kind is heresy, and unforgivable if they don’t convert to Catholicism specifically?

I’m asking this deep question because I need to know the Catholic view from the perspective OF a Catholic in order to compare it to a protestant view from the perspective of a protestant. This will all be cross-referenced with the Bible’s own words and an opinion formed.
