Normal Sudoku SIZE Does Not Apply

With our apologies, this video is being released late this evening to try and fill a gap in the schedule today as Mark is travelling. This puzzle has been solved on the channel before but by Mark not Simon. Simon recorded this video a few months ago without realising Mark had already recorded a solve of the puzzle so this is a very rare opportunity to watch Simon & Mark attempt the same sudoku and contrast their styles! Mark's original solve video is here:

*** TODAY'S PUZZLE ***
Wait, this puzzle doesn't seem to the right size?! Nor does it seem to have the right digits in it?! What's going on!? A very nice small sudoku today from the setter HawkAvatar (who goes by the name Finn on Discord). It's amazing how much clever logic fits into something so small. Play the puzzle at the link below:

Rules:
This puzzle uses six of the digits 0-9; the solver must determine which six. Place one copy of each digit in each row/column/box. Digits along thermometers increase from the bulb end. Digits along an arrow sum to the digit in that arrow's circle. Cells separated by a V contain digits summing to 5; ALL possible Vs are given.

Note that the software "check" function doesn't not understand the complicated rules of this puzzle so will mark you wrong even if you get the answer right. You can check your solution using the video.

*** NEW CONTENT ON PATREON ***
As well as the Phistomefel and Jay Dyer extravaganzas, Simon's solve of Magnus Josefsson's puzzle Castle Wall Yin Yang #1 is now available as a bonus video. You can play the puzzle at the link below (and the logic-masters link contains an example):

Simon does it again. R3C3 cannot be a 0 because it is next to the 5 in r3c4. But Simon gets it by realizing he needs to use the negative restraint, but applies in to box 5 instead and determines r3c2 is the zero so r3c3 can’t be.
Normal people: A=>Z
Simon (genius): A=>B, B=>C or D, but ~C, therefore D, D=>E, E=>F, …, X=>Y, Y=>Z.

It pained me so much watching this and Simon completely missing the negative constraint on 5 and 0 throughout the whole puzzle. He even explained the negative constraint at one point then immediately placed a 01 pencil mark next to a 5 🤣🤣

Simon noticing that puting two 5 and 0 together would make another domino sum to five... but not the original 5 and 0... is pure Simon logic i guess

The dedication to the two a schedule is truly special.

I am impressed by how far Simon got despite forgetting the negative constraint! I love watching your videos….despite your normal forgetfulness, but that’s a human thing to do. Love the solves!

Simon at the end of the puzzle, "I used the negative constraint quite profusely." -- Simon at the beginning of the puzzle, pencil marks a 0 next to 5 :)

Did this puzzle in under 20 mins and spent a couple more wondering where have I made a mistake :D This is my punishment for not reading the whole description! I had a wonderful time solving it! Now I will watch both of you and compare :)

Can we all just appreciate the fact that Simon managed to solve the puzzle without using the negative constraint on 5's and 0's?

At 13:00 Simon picks a really strange place for the negative V constraint, observing that an arrow summing to 5 with 0/x/y/0 on it would need a V between the x and y.
It is much easier to note that neither R3C3 nor R5C2 can be zeros because of the 5s in RC4 and R6C2.

It is possible to make the solution checker work with puzzles like this. Just need to manually embed the solution when entering the puzzle into the tool.
But without this it will assume it’s a standard 6x6 and the existence of 0 and 7 will have made it think the solution was wrong.

i started this video, decided to solve the puzzle, solved the puzzle, got the "that doesn't look quite right" pop-up, struggled to see where I had gone wrong, returned to the video, watched Simon solve the puzzle identically, and then saw him get the same result!

Interesting that Mark and Simon both pretty much forgot about the negative constraint in their solves

Fun fact: I just solved the whole puzzle while completely forgetting the negative constraint on the V-sum. So I basically considered the puzzle with the ruleset "Not all Vs are given", and it still unfolded perfectly to the same solution with basically the same logical steps. It only takes a bit more thinking why the 5-0 pair has to be on the V in box 2 and why the grid doesn't exist of 3 pairs summing to 5, for which the arrow in box2 is key.

This is the first one I made substantial progress on by myself, but needed to watch the first half to get an insight or two I was missing. Love that it wasn't too unwieldy to try possibilities out and show myself what might disprove an assumption. Notably, the mobile version says that the puzzle didn't come with a solution when you check it, so that message must not have made it to the desktop version!

Simon, never change. You manage to miss clues, and then solve them in the most epic ways possible.

This is a great puzzle to upload tonight. I was pretty sure I had watched Mark's solve from some months ago, and yes, I had, I had left a comment. So I went back and watched it again after watching you do this, Simon. Very interesting and fun - I love to compare and contrast the two of you. Thanks for all that both of you do to provide us with two sudoku videos every day!

This is the first time in my ~3 years of watching that there's not been both a Simon video and a Mark video in the same day, I'm sure. Maybe I'm misremembering but that's an impressive feat if so!

This was the first Sudoku I actually could figure out! I got it in 20 minutes!

I love the logic behind the 5's and 0's. Very clever!
