Written, directed and produced by Academy Award® winner Angelina Jolie Pitt, By the Sea serves as her directorial follow-up to Universal Pictures’ epic Unbroken. The dramatic film stars Brad Pitt and Jolie Pitt, who are supported by an international ensemble led by Mélanie Laurent, Melvil Poupaud, Niels Arestrup and Richard Bohringer.

By the Sea follows an American writer named Roland (Pitt) and his wife, Vanessa (Jolie Pitt), who arrive in a tranquil and picturesque seaside resort in 1970s France, their marriage in apparent crisis. As they spend time with fellow travelers, including young newlyweds Lea (Laurent) and François (Poupaud), and village locals Michel (Arestrup) and Patrice (Bohringer), the couple begins to come to terms with unresolved issues in their own lives.

In its style, and its treatment of themes of the human experience, By the Sea is inspired by European cinema and theater of the ’60s and ’70s.

Jolie Pitt is joined behind the scenes by a key crew that includes cinematographer Christian Berger (The White Ribbon), who used his Cine Reflect Lighting System to shoot the film; production designer Jon Hutman (Unbroken); editor Patricia Rommel (The Lives of Others); and costume designer Ellen Mirojnick (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps). Pitt joins her in production duties, while Chris Brigham (Inception), Holly Goline-Sadowski (Unbroken) and Michael Vieira (Unbroken) serve as executive producers.

Ok so after all this time, I was JUST told by someone at the Ritz in Chicago over the summer that Angelina Jolie wrote this movie as a way for Brad Pitt to cope with his marriage to Jennifer Aniston!!!! I don’t know if it’s true since people babble off gossip and fake stories all the time to people... but this person is actually well known (behind the scenes) and said she played the part of Aniston and Brad played well.. Brad. They dressed it up a bit using a foreign town, added some drama with the neighbors and spying on happiness and what a marriage should look like.. but all the subtleties are there. It was supposed to be therapeutic, but then it backfired and did the opposite. The movie was garbage and everyone supposedly saw what Angelina Jolie did with her screenplay. She was playing a vapid, lonely, boring, shell of a person who wanted a baby and couldn’t have one, and her husband was a drunk trying to get work and support her through her longing for a child. Anyways...

Has anyone else heard anything like this?.. because as AWFUL as this movie was the first time I saw it, after hearing that story I kind of want to watch again to pick up on the clues? Especially since they couldn’t have kids in the movie which was the source of the conflict between the two leads. I’m not saying this was true, but if it is.. how insensitive can one woman be to use her husband’s past marriage and pain and not only put it in a screenplay, but have those 2 act it out!!
