========= Race To The Sea LYRICS ==========

We’re keeping the kingdom free

As an archduke falls and the battle horn calls
our lives would never be the same
We were looking down the barrel of a gun
Now the war has come and the battle has begun
we are desperate and overrun
To the war drum we’ll be marching until it’s done

Lead the way, we will follow into the fray
We will hold the line we will not be led astray

For king and for country we, are flooding the river
Our stand at Yser will be, the end of the race to the sea
The last piece of Belgium is free, we’re keeping a sliver
A cog in the war machine, October of 1914

As our foe draws forth we are moving on north
we will never let them have it all
There’s a price for freedom paid by Belgium’s sons
They may take our towns, they may conquer our grounds
we’ll defend the nation and the crown
We’ll uphold our independence with our guns

All the way, on to triumph or to judgement day
We will follow and we will not be led astray

See a king and a soldier, fighting shoulder to shoulder
See a king and a soldier, fighting shoulder to shoulder
He overruled his commanders, he made a last stand in Flanders
We see our king and a soldier,
they’re fighting shoulder to shoulder
To keep the last piece of Belgium free

All the way, on to triumph or to judgement day
We will follow and we will not be led astray

For king and for country we are flooding the river
Our stand at Yser will be, the end of the race to the sea
We’re free
For king and for country we are flooding the river
No more of our country lost, the line will be held at all cost

========= Historic Fact ==========

The Entente and the Belgians successfully crushed the Germans’ hopes of continuing the Schlieffen Plan during The Battle of the Yser, mainly because of the deliberate flooding of the Yser Canal, which greatly affected the German trenches.

Fun fact: officially the Belgian monarch doesn't hold the title of "King of Belgium" and instead holds the title of "King of the Belgians" this was decided when Belgium gained it's independence to reflect that the King was supposed to be a King of the people. Albert I lived up to said title.

fun fact= his wife (queen Elizabeth of Belgians) was nicknamed the "Queen nurse" because she established a new hospital and visited the soldiers to boost morale, on occasion she even helped in operations, ... she even sent flowers, chocolate + she gave also presents to the nurses to show them she appreciated their work as nurses.

If I had a nickel for every time Sabaton sung about how awesome the Belgians are in fighting against all odds, I’d have two nickels.

Just imagine. You've been fighting a losing war for weeks on end and your nation is about to fall. And when all hope seems lost, there is your king. He's not simply there to cheer you on, but to fight by your side and risk his life same as you risk your own. Imagine how inspiring that must have been. It's no wonder they turned the tide there.

"No more of our country lost, the line will be held at all cost" and damn did they hold it. All the way until the end of war.

My great great grandad fought in this battle as part of the Grenadier Guard, who at that time were serving as part of a Scottish regiment; he ended up making it home in one piece and died a year before my dad was born. His brother wasn’t so lucky, he fought in WW2 at the beaches on D-Day and was one of the first to land but tragically died of his injuries 4 days in at the age of 29 and is buried in Normandy, I’m hoping to go over soon and pay my respects since no one has ever visited his grave

A cog in the war machine? this line is even better when you learn who came up with the plan of flooding the river: His name was Karel Cogge. Superb

I am personally a Belgian. This song has made me shed a tear, I can't even lie. My town was ravaged in the 'rape of Belgium', and in Belgium the great war is remembered more than in even the UK. Literally everywhere you go there are monuments of the great war.

Thank you, for this master piece of music!

A royal fighting as a soldier, a king who stood to the end. A battle marked the end of a contest. The end of the race to the sea, where King Albert of the Belgians stood.

As a teenager living just 30 minutes from the Yser, this makes me happy. WW1 is still being rememered a lot in this area, it is a shame that most other teenagers don't really care about history. I think that Sabaton captured the situation really well. Greetings from West-Flandres and the Kingdom of Belgium.

There's a story about Albert, I don't know if it's true or not but it is said that when Germany started to march into Belgium the many ministers wanted to surrender right away but King Albert rode into the room on a horse and said that Belgium will not surrender and that if the ministers were taking this decision he was taking over the leadership of the country.

As someone from Belgium, this really hits me hard, how they made this song so accurately, a small country sacrifing a lot and even flooding its own land just to slow down the germans... I love this song so much

"For king and for country we are flooding the river" is such a good line

When I read about the song, I thought this song would be about the British going to the sea. When I found out that this was going about the Battle of the Yser, I was gladly surprised! I am Belgian, so to find out that this is the second time Sabaton sings about us, it's humbling... They really should go and write an album, with nothing but Belgian stories! Vive La Belgique! Lang Leve België!
