Ace - How Long

3rd track from "Five-A-Side" (1974). Rather than being about a two-timing lover, this song was actually written about another band that was "trying to nick our bass player," as Paul Carrack put it when he appeared on the BBC Breakfast news program in 2009. Interesting, yes, but it still works better as a jealous lover song, don't you think?

Anyway, bass player Terry Comer, object of the "nicking," returned in time to play on the original recording. And the bass introduction is borrowed from "Traveling Song" by the British folk rock group Pentangle.

"How Long" was one of the first songs Carrack wrote and remains one of his biggest hits. It reached No. 3 in the US and Canadian charts and No. 20 in the UK chart. It's been recorded many times since. For instance, in 2013 it was covered by Smooth Jazz artists Jeff Golub & Brian Auger, with vocals handled by pop-yacht-rocker Christopher Cross.

A song about the ACE bass player moonlighting and playing in another band behind the other band member's back.
