"How Long" is a 1974 song by the British group Ace from their album Five-A-Side. It reached No. 3 in the US and Canadian charts, and No. 20 in the UK chart. Lead singer Paul Carrack composed the song upon discovering that bassist Terry Comer had been secretly working with other bands. Comer returned to Ace in time to play on the song.

When I was a kid in the 1970s songs like this were on the radio all the time. We were spoiled! Didn't appreciate it. It was like water running from the tap. Now I look back and see how great it was.

Everything seemed cooler in the 70’s. This song is a classic, what a voice Paul Carrick has.

1974. My husband of 40 years played bass and this is one of the first songs he learned to play. He’s been playing in heaven for 6 yrs on the 15th and then I hear this commercial and I know he’s telling me he’s still with me. Long live the songs of the 70’s.

Forgot all about this song. Heard the soundtrack on a TV commercial. They unfortunately don't make music like this anymore

The vocal is timeless, the lead solo is gold, and the bass line is perfection. Everything about this is superb. Pure sonic bliss.

I’m a 40 yr old black man born in ‘78 that grew up on hip hop. But as I got older I began to appreciate the other genres of music regardless of what era. If it catches my ear I’ll listen to it. My 1st time hearing this song was last week on the Amazon commercial. It’s been stuck in my head so I had to find it and hear the whole song. It’s now in my playlist

Man I miss the late 70’s and 80’s! I was 16 in 1980. Music was far better then the crap they call music today.

Melody, melody, melody! That is where real music lives! I am a 58 year old black male musician, and came of age with disco/early eighties (as a teenager). It is amazing to step back and acknowledge how great contemporary musicians from the 70s and 80s really were. They did not have "auto-tune". They did not have 64 track channels in the recording studios back then. The technology was very rudimentary, compared with what we have today. Yet, they were able to come up with gems like this, based on their musicianship, and divine talent. Also remember they were all young people in their 20s when they created this magic! Amazing!

Also please remember that contemporary (popular) music is always targeted at the "youth of the day" (roughly ages 13 to 30). Now the 30, 40, 50 and 60 year olds (in any generation) are welcome to listen; but they are not the target audience. So just think back in 1974 (when this was released), the 18 year olds were the target audience. This is the level of "musical sophistication" that the "youth of the day" were exposed to, day in and day out!

For the record: this song is not about cheating. The bass player at the time was caught "moonlighting" for another band, to make more cash. The fallout from him being confronted by the other band members, led to this song.

That's it for now. Thanks to Ace and lead singer Paul Carrack for this gem and true classic that will outlive all of us. Enjoy!
Cheers, Sam.

😲 Shocked when I realize that Ace's how long, Squeeze's Tempted, and Mike and the Mechanics' In the living years, were all sung by Paul Carrack! This man is a beast!
