SIMPLE DRILL TO FEEL AN EFFORTLESS SWING

In this tip I show you a simple golf drill that will allow you to feel an effortless golf swing. Try this the next time you're at the range to stop trying to hit the ball hard with your arms.

A powerful, effortless, pain-free golf swing is different. This is because your arms are no longer the power source. Instead, it's your legs and hips that give you the power. This simple golf drill will give you this feeling so you know what to look for into the future.

For some, this is difficult because they want to keep hitting with the dominant hand. This simple golf drill (inspired by Jim Furyk) takes the power out of the dominant hand so you can feel what an effortless golf swing is supposed to feel like.

This doesn't mean you have to do this drill forever (unless you want to). You are doing this simple golf drill to get the feeling then remember it when you do your normal swing.

Once you know the feeling, try to stop trying to hit the ball as hard as you can and start to power your swing with your legs and hips (body).

I’m 76, Paul, and I switched to the double overlap grip about 12 years ago while working with your Swing Machine Golf methodology. I still use it today on all shots from tee to green. I’ve tried a few times to revert back to single overlap, but before long my right hand was once again dominating the downswing. To me the double overlap grip puts the right hand in a supporting role, which is where I want it. My grip pressure through impact used to be primarily in the middle and ring fingers of each hand, but with the double overlap grip it’s more in the thumb and forefinger of each hand. May not work for everyone, but it works for me.

Hey Paul, I implemented your advice on both of these videos and broke 80 today. You just made my day!!! I subscribed and liked and I love how you make it easy for a beginner to understand your teachings. THANK YOU BRO👌👌👊👊👌👌👊👊🤘🤘

I was in a 3 day tournament with 65 players and after 2 days I was in 18th place. My short game was carrying me but I was struggling with my long game. I spent a few hours watching your videos after my round yesterday, then went to the range 90 minutes before my tee time today to apply your principles. It worked immediately and I went out and won the tournament!! Thank you!!!

Since watching Paul's instruction over the past few weeks it has transformed my swing. I have less tension and stress, and as he says, feel the weight of the club-head, and that is something I have never really felt as I was always hanging on for dear life. This tuition has been particularly beneficial to me as I am just over 3-months out from lower back surgery. I admire his constant efforts to help others and the way he appears to reply to many of the comments he receives.

This makes a lot of sense . . . Definitely worth the price of a big bucket or two at the range.

I'm happy to have found someone that explains the terminology of golf so that even I can understand it! 🙃 My boss (who is a damn good golfer himself) has told me all these things before, but Paul, you have a gift of explaining it so that I'm actually able to apply it. Thank you!!!

One of the best guys to watch for improving speed. Keep the tension out of the arms and shoulders and let them swing, not hit. Helped greatly. Gotta keep the legs & hips strong as you get older to play well. Helped me go from 103 to 110-112 with the driver. Thanks Paul. Cheers!

I'll try this.

Currently I use Ben Hogan's grip recommendation, which is that the majority of the grip is derived from the middle & ring fingers of each hand.

Thanks Paul, the weather there looks great!

Great video Paul. I bought the Body Swing system well over a year ago (excellent investment) & watch your Youtube videos. I still have not played an entire round without slipping back into trying to crush the ball occasionally, and some days are still absolute disasters. But with persistent focus, on a good day 90% - 95% of shots are easy, effortless and produce much better results. The hit-impulse is really a destructive addiction. Amazing how difficult it is to overcome. I never thought I would conquer that monster, but you have helped me so much. Thank you.

Paul, thanks for your methods for finding effortless power (and not injuring yourself). A few days ago, a friend (one of those guys who never swings hard but hits it 270) suggested watching the "body swing" guy on youtube. I haven't really watched much, but I did catch a video of yours from maybe 7 or 8 years ago, where you recommended learning to take a full swing to hit it 2/3 of your normal distance, and once you have that, rotate a a bit faster to hit it further. The idea I took from that is that if you want to hit it 250, first learn how to hit it 170.

Good point, I've been sort of trying to do that, but struggling to bring my distances back up, tending to chop off my backswing and lose power while lunge to try to control the shot. I can make my way around, but I know I'm losing a lot of distance.

Today, I woke up with a nasty painful muscle in my lower right back I got from jamming a fairway wood way thick last week. Honestly, I was considering calling off the round an hour before. I set the goal today of taking plenty of club, a full backswing to his 2/3 of my distance, and survive, not make my back strain worse. I tried every shot with full backswing, hands back pretty high, end up facing the target, even some wedges from 50 yards.

I miss-hit a few, but did really well, considering, and no sharp pain. I hit straighter than average, and basically as far, I looked at my driver face at one point, the impacts were within a half-dollar or so, upper middle ( I tend to low toe, generally). I had no crazy snaps, a couple of high pushes, and two or three really solid 230-40's in the middle of the fairway, longer than typical, and hit a few approach shots to the back of the green, including one from a fairway bunker. I scored a little on the high side of average, but I was experimenting all day, I hit well above average number of pure shots.

Hopefully I don't have to have a bad back to keep improving! There is so much to having the confidence to take a full swing without pulling or pushing it out of play, allowing, releasing, fully.

Thanks for todays tip about practicing with a varden (or double) grip. Years ago I practiced with a varden grip here and there, but my tendency is a firmer interlocking grip for control, but I'm sure my club is releasing around my thumb of my lower hand, killing my speed, and if I can gain confidence in a full "effortless power" swing, and the club is rotating around the end of the club, my distance will improve

Great tip. Two things happened recently - 1 - it was kinda wet a while back so I wore a glove which I haven't done for the last ten years - played better right away - left arm and grip felt stronger right arm just riding along. Hurt my right wrist playing tennis and when I went golfing all practice/warm up swings were one handed (left) got the feeling - now hitting nice little draws with extra distance - just feeling like my left arm is LONG and extended but relaxed - LEGIT thanks Paul

I’ve found the swing. It’s an amazing feeling.. ball just rockets off driver straight as an arrow and 30-40 yards further..
I’m Addicted but I tend to lose the swing around the middle of a round. Can feel that right arm trying to swing all of a sudden. And then I’m in a fight within myself to get it back. Although Have had several rounds where I, ve hit 12-14 drives perfect. But am having trouble taking iron swing back on the course consistently. The search has been a lot of fun. Feel like I’m Close to dropping 10 strokes. Thanks

Hello Paul! Thank you very much for this tip! I am a former shot put player right handed. This really happens to me... My dominant hand really affected my golf shots...

I have found your Body Swing video and the tips on YouTube to be game changers for me. It hasn’t been easy to lose the hitting instinct but each week I’ve made progress and it’s starting to show up on the course. I took lessons for three years at without seeing a lot of improvement. Trying to hit a draw with a strong grip led to an open face at impact because my hands rotated in the backswing. So I was supposed to make a move during the downswing to bite my wrist. Impossible! I also had an improper take away and terrible wrist hinge. None of that was addressed. I’m a big believer in your methods and will tell all my friends.

Paul, I am so glad I found your site, I used to drop kick my driver, but after watching your video on coming off my right heel is a game changer. My driver is going 250 without swing hard, like many in the post state I often loose the swing in the back 9, I'm probably trying to swing harder to get more distance, and using arms instead moving lower body faster. I will try the two finger grip at my next range session. One thing I wanted to mention is your body turn is the same thing they trying to teach with the down under board, I made my own board and using your turn to build on.

My son is a strong natural ball striker. Body turn, swing plane and lag instinctively come to him. However, he had developed some bad habits over the last couple of years, the main one was keeping his wrists tight and trying to drag the face across the bottom of the swing. Control was nonexistent. He asked me in desperation to help him get things sorted out. It quickly became apparent to me what the problem was and I showed him the techniques of loose arms and wrists - hinge...unhinge.

The next thing I did was give him a link to Paul's YouTube channel to show where I had learned it. He watched Paul's videos for hours, soaked it up and is hitting better than ever. He is now another Paul Wilson acolyte. This stuff really works, folks.
