Gollum, an important character from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit novels, is getting his own movie. The film, produced by Warner Bros., will have Peter Jackson as the producer and Andy Serkis as the director. But why did they decide to make a movie about Gollum? What kind of story does Gollum have that is worth telling in detail? And what is The Hunt for Gollum?

I use many different sources for the visuals I incorporate. It's not always clear who created some of the works or many individuals share the same work under their own name. Therefore I only credit those I am certain about. If your work is in the video, please get in touch and I will gladly add your name to the list.

I'd like to see it. Especially Andy Serkis' vision of his character's development.

Tolkien said nothing about Aragorn feeling badly about his ancestor’s failure to destroy the ring. Nor did Aragorn have any animosity toward his family. He was a ranger and rangers were there to defend the people of Middle Earth from Sauron’s evil doings as he said at the Council of Elrond.
Elrond had told Isildur to destroy the ring but Isildur could not at the time. They never went to Mt Doom as it shows in the movie. Isildur went and looked into the history of the ring and then decided that it would be best to give it to the “Wise Ones, ” meaning the elves. He was on his way to do that when he was attacked and killed by Orks.
Isildur was not the evil person that Jackson made him out to be and Aragorn wanted to be king. It was the only way that he could marry the elf of his dreams, Arwen. Elrond had told him that he could only marry his daughter if he was king of both realms.
Jackson changed the personalities of every one of the heroes of that story for the worst. He claimed that the heroes that Tolkien had wrote about were “too good” and he could not present them that way. Sad.
What will Jackson do this time? Since he has no real story to go by (not that he would) I would suppose that he will come up with all kinds of un-Tolkien stuff just like he did for the other movies. Everyone that was involved with that movie is over twenty years older now. Andy can be digitalized but would they do that with the others or get look alike? I’m afraid to see to tell you the truth.

It will possibly be a good film if you consider that they will tell, explain and show many areas from the second age and maybe from first also. I don't think they will put too much focus on Golum himself, but more on what he has gone through, which will provide answers to many things that we might not have seen coming or which will give a meaningful answer from all the films from Lotr and hobbit. Hope we also get a bit shown in relation to sauron prime and other things. As long as Peter Jackson is making it, I will remain calm.

They should do a movie about the 1st age that would be epic.

A new Gollum movie only works if they show him as little as possible. The focus needs to be on the "instigators" on both sides: Gandalf & Aragorn vs. Sauron, et al.

If they approach it like a "whodunit" - something akin to a Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson vs. Moriarty, with Gollum being a McGuffin, they could turn it into a huge detective story that I think really works.

Nothing like it has ever been filmed. It would be an entirely new genre...

I really don´t know why we need more exposition of Gollum. We already have a great depiction from his game: Gollum.

Yes, I think that Gollum deserves his own movie. I believe that each of the characters deserve their own movie.

Fan fiction, hopefully I will eat my words and it will be good but I highly doubt it.

Whilst TLOTR is a cinematic masterpiece, we all remember what Jackson did with the hobbit. Is this gong to be another soulless cash grab filled with characters that didn’t exist and extended way longer than it needs to be?

In fairness to PJ, he did include in his film the scenes of Gollum being tortured in Barad-Dur and relating (from my memory); "Yes, he has but 4 fingers on his right hand, but they are enough!". So PJ did recognize that Sauron still utilized a humanoid body, not just the "Flaming Eye".
As for this upcoming film, I'm rather hesitant to get too excited over it. Though I think both PJ and Andy Serkis are truly amazing, gifted individuals, PJ can be, shall we say... too creative at times. As "The Hobbit" trilogy revealed, PJ fell victim to the concept of embellishing the story with fan-fiction for profit. Something he was adamant at NOT doing with his LOTR trilogy.
There's no way The Hobbit Novel contained sufficient info to support an entire trilogy of films, so a LOT of the content was fan fiction. Now, whether the Studio demanded this absurd embellishment and forced PJ's hand, we don't really know. But that, plus the bizarre CGI, film frame-rate, childish sequences and non-cannon characters focused on for WAY too long, damn near sunk the entire endeavour. Fortunate for him, "Rings of Power" would come along and prove just how worse fan-fiction can actually get.
Serkis however seems to have a stronger grasp on what truly works in films as of late, so I still have hope. A fool's hope perhaps but hope nonetheless. :)

Gollum is a great character and I hope the movie turns out well. But I would be interested in a movie about Aragorn’s youth.

Gollum was a polarizing character who at the same time was both evil, but sympathetic because his evil was due to the corruption of the ring.
He's also, at least the way I see it, the ultimate hero of the story. He got Frodo and Sam into Mordor, and in the end, when Frodo succumbed to the ring, it was Gollum's attack on him that caused the end of the ring

Having said that, they will mostly be making this up from scratch so.... not sure how this will turn out, but at least the source material will be taken seriously, unlike the Rings of Power

There isn't enough information about the pursuit of gollum in the books for a single film yet alone two!
