In May 2024, it was announced that Serkis would direct, executive produce, and star in Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum for Warner Bros. Pictures, a new installment in the Lord of the Rings film series, with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens writing the screenplay alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou and Jackson producing alongside Walsh and Boyens; the film is expected to be released in 2026.

Gollum was imprisoned by Mirkwood Elves even before the Fellowship. He escaped once and that was the bad news for Elrond brought by Legolas to Rivendell. That was at the same time when Frodo and comp. were here and there it was decided to establish the Fellowship of the Ring.
