To solve the food crisis, China starts mass 'seawater rice' planting.

Well, hard work pays off as seawater grain produced from salt-affected soil! At present, more than 1,100 million hectares of soil are affected by salinity and sodicity (which degrades soil properties). Of this total, 60 percent of the soil is saline, 26 percent sodic, and the remaining 14 percent saline-sodic. China has 100 million hectares of salt-affected soil, about the size of Egypt, and one-third of this soil has the potential for agricultural activities. In order to solve this problem, China has made a lot of efforts.

In the past ten years from 2012 to 2022, seawater rice has been widely promoted in China, reaching a total of 400 square kilometers. At the end of 2022, the planting area of seawater rice in China has been expanded to nearly 670 square kilometers. However, some people think that this is a waste of effort, because the taste of the seawater rice is very unpalatable, even if it is planted, it will not be sold.

So, what exactly is seawater rice? Why does China grow such an unpalatable food on a large scale? Is it irrigated with seawater? OK, that and more is exactly what we are going to talk about, and let’s get started!

This is only the start. It is already a great advancement that they can even grow rice in saltwater. I am very sure they will continue to improve it.

It will sell at a premium if it does not taste foul and is low in glycemic index. After all, it is actually superior in nutrition.

I wonder if there some similarities between this seawater rice and the "wild rice" that grows wild in the United States. I think the "wild rice" in US is reddish (or blackish) and it is sold at a higher price. The grapevine says the natural grown wild rice can only be legally harvested by the American Indians. I have also bought black (dark reddish) sweet rice (黑糯米)at the local Vietnamese (Chinese) grocery store here in Denver, Colorado. They taste fine to me.

Since food shortage is an ongoing important issue in many parts of the world, continuous research in sea water rice is worthwhile and necessary. Moreover, with polar glaciers and high mountain glaciers melting, sea water may be less salty, and less fresh water will be available in rivers.

It can be stored for a long time for future use. If or when there is a food shortage people can still eat this and survive. Also with increasing population in India it can be sold to them.

Jai Hinduja. Red colored rice costs 2 or 3 times more in my country. It is more difficult to boil the rice. So I can only mix red with white rice to maximise the nutrients.

The criminal act of SANCTIONS is equivalent to "I am holier than thou art"..and they forget Newton's law that says, "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction"..so KARMA is coming if it hasn't come yet..

I would eat this rice over Sweetwater rice because of pesticides and proteinIt would make great animal feed if people dont eat it.

they should market it as superfood. Raise the prices and the western nations market will beg to buy it. Use the trading deficit to purchase normal rice :D
