This story only originated in the 2000's based on one book, directed at an audience who had never served in the military. Yes German POW's at gunpoint carried ammunition and provided support roles for their captors. Something that regularly happened during the war. It was just in this case the POW camp the battle was fought over housed a lot of high profile prisoners.

This was interesting; I often wonder why the French are always bashing Americans… despite D-day & events following it - where Americans have been available for their rescue.
