Castle Itter in Austria was the setting of one of the strangest battles of WW2, where an unlikely group fought together to stop the SS from terminating French VIP's. Please SUBSCRIBE to our channel and support us:

The book, “The Last Battle” by Stephen Harding accurately lays out the details of this incredible battle where The Americans, The French, The Wehrmacht and an SS Officer fought together to defend the lives of French VIPs. Any errors or omissions in the story are entirely our own.

The shocking fact that, the SS officer Kurt Schrader survived the war and lived untill 2016 in Germany, and passed away in the age of 105.

Josef Gangl: "I never thought I'd die fighting side by side with an American."
Jack Lee: "What about side by side with a friend?"
Josef Gangl: "Aye. I could do that."

I find it so bitter sweet that Gangl is the only one on the defender's side who died. Protected everyone until the end. Rest well, brother. o7

It's weird thinking that these elderly Frenchmen might have been WWI veterans, fighting in the same conditions and thinking "Now this is the battle I'm used to when I was younger" since there were a lot of forts in WWI. Heck, some of them might've even been from Verdun, fighting in fortresses like Vaux or Douaumont.

P.S: I wonder how the ghost of the lord who made this castle would've felt, when the walls managed to withstand modern weaponry.

Everybody laughs at the tennis racket guy, until he starts serving grenades.

American and German troops, some SS soldier guy, and French politicians all coming together to fight off what was left of Hitler’s army in a castle. Absolutely badass. Seriously this story always just blows my mind every time I hear it.

Tennis Player: Hi there, I'm just an Austrian citizen picking up berries in the middle of the forest where there are gunshots firing around me. I'm definitely not escaping to get reinforcements to help the Americans. Okay bye!

The 2 Waffen SS soldiers: Well, that was weird.

This would honestly make a great WW2 movie - different sides coming and working together to fight the good fight. Action, drama even comedy with the tennis player having his moments.
