If my parents ask me to translate something, I feel so incredibly proud because its time for me to do something for them not the other way around like always

my parents always told me to translate for them ever since i was able to speak english myself. i would read to them the notes from my teachers, mail they received, calls to doctors or much more important calls. i personally was never bothered by it, because they risked everything and left everything behind to bring me here to have a better future than the one i would’ve had back in méxico. i am so proud of them now as well, since they are able to say a few phrases in english and are able to talk with people from their work. and i am so happy and proud of them <3

I was born in South Africa but my parents are Turkish. Dad knew a bit of English, but mom didn't. It was really hard, learning two languages at the same time, and Turkish isn't an easy language. When I got older, I became the translater for my family, even though my Turkish sucked.

My parents are not immigrants but my mom is half deaf in one ear so she asks me to repeat what people say a lot and I used to be embarrassed but I’ve learned to realize that it’s nothing to be ashamed of

Me too!! When I was younger, before I went to school I always waited in my car with my dad and lil sis. My dad couldn't speak English well so I kept telling him and I know some things I told him but I'ma only tell u one. The word I used to help him with is "angry" and "hungry"

I feel bad too. Mostly banks think I’m scamming my dad on the phone. They don’t know I’m paying his every bill.

Interesting to hear about other people’s immigration stories.
I also had immigrant parents (my dad worked two jobs, mom one) and they learned decent English by practicing just 15 minutes a day because they didn’t want to keep embarrassing me :) I appreciate them for that. All it takes is just a little time per day

Understand your immigrant parents. I migrated at 28 and started a whole new life and it was one of the best decision in the world. You know your children will do better.

Don’t be embarrassed about it! It shows the strength of your parents and it’s being bi lingual is HOT

My mom always asks me to translate some administrative documents (cuz my dad knows French quite well)
And it’s not that I don’t want to translate, but it’s because I am just as clueless honestly 💀

I understand and sometimes they were just like looking back and forth to me and my parents if we were at like a restaurant

I know you’d gotten some flack saying you were being ungrateful, but I also don’t think many realize or even come close to understanding how hard it can be because of it. I am the oldest as well and being the only Asian kid in school, being darker than they think a Chinese girl should be, along with so many other things, I was teased mercilessly. So, when you’re just trying to fit in, having to translate and having more things to stand out for makes it hard. As an adult, I am happy I was able to help and embrace my uniqueness now, but as a kid, it was HARD! So while some don’t understand your viewpoint, I promise you, there are those who do and know that you love them and would never want to change them, but the feelings you had were still valid!

When ever my parents were talking to an English person .. the other person sometimes wouldn’t understand what they said .. so I would have to say it for them lol
