Commonality of Temporary Pain: Temporary and transient upper abdominal pain is very common, often caused by gas, bloating, muscle strain, coughing, or indigestion.

Gallbladder Issues as Primary Cause: Gallbladder problems are the most common cause of upper right abdominal pain, accounting for more than 50% of cases.

Gallstones: Gallstones can block the gallbladder duct, causing severe pain in the upper right or middle abdomen, especially after consuming fatty meals.

Pain Radiation: Gallbladder-related pain can radiate to the back or right shoulder.

Cholecystitis: Persistent pain may indicate gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis), accompanied by fever, vomiting, and general health deterioration.

Risk Factors for Gallstones: Obesity and a high-fat diet significantly increase the risk of developing gallstones.

Ultrasound for Diagnosis: Ultrasound is key in diagnosing gallbladder stones and inflammation.

Gastritis as the Second Cause: Gastritis, inflammation of the stomach, is responsible for about 20% of upper right abdominal pain cases, causing a dull, gnawing pain.

Symptoms of Gastritis: Symptoms include feeling full quickly (early satiety), belching, burping, and bloating.

Helicobacter pylori Infection: Gastritis is commonly caused by Helicobacter pylori, sometimes due to prolonged use of NSAIDs like aspirin or ibuprofen.

Peptic Ulcers: Peptic ulcers, particularly in the duodenum, are the third most common cause, with similar symptoms to gastritis but often include night pain.

Liver Disease: Acute hepatitis from alcohol, toxins, or viruses is a common cause of liver-related upper abdominal pain.

Kidney Issues: Less commonly, kidney stones or pyelonephritis (kidney inflammation) can cause severe pain, often radiating to the lower abdomen and groin.

Pneumonia and Pleural Pain: Right upper abdominal pain can also stem from pneumonia or pleural issues affecting the right lung, characterized by sharp, stabbing pain that worsens with breathing.

Diagnostic and Treatment Approaches: Treatment varies by cause, ranging from dietary adjustments and pain relievers for gallbladder issues, to antibiotics for infections, and possibly surgery for severe cases.
