At this time of year, the urge to start sowing for the coming growing season is almost irresistible. But it’s too soon for most crops - or is it?

Bursting with nutrients and packing a punch of taste, microgreens can be sown right now for a harvest within weeks or even days.

In this short video we’ll show you everything you need to know to grow microgreens indoors under grow lights.

Another great idea from the Elton John of gardening.

I grow sunflower sprouts from bird feed bags, too! I also grow buckwheat, flax, wheat, beans and garbanzos from the bulk bins at whole foods. I save radish, brassicas and lettuce seeds from the fall and I have TONS, so I always grow some as micro greens. I use Jiffy Seed starting mix in washed used aluminum foil pans.

My favourites to grow are: peas, sunflowers, kale, broccoli, tatsoi and cabbage. I have set up LED lights on a sturdy shelf and have been growing and eating micro greens since October.

mung beans, also known as bean sprouts in your Chinese takeaway.
easy to grow on your kitchen window sill any time of year.
rinse a slack hand full of mung beans under a tap, drop them into a glass jar and loosely fasten the lid.
pop it on your kitchen window sill and ignore it.
seven days later, you have the making of a stir fry in your jar, throw the jar contents into your pan when you are ready.

Didn't realize this is so easy! I think I'll give it a try. Thanks for sharing. Catherine

Great video, thanks for reminding me it's never the wrong time to start growing your own food.

Enjoyed this one. I find that the microgreens easily come out of the tray in one solid block when they are ready to crop and by doing so making them much easier to cut. :-) 🍺

I grow microgreens (peas) on wet fibermats, wet cotton or even wet paper. It’s much cleaner indoor and you can cut
the microgreens lower down, with no risk of getting soil on.

I have grown microgreens quite successfully without the grow lights. Simply place in a sunny window when they start to sprout.

I grew buckwheat. In a jar to sprout them, then just on top of a paper towel placed on a piece of screen. I dampened the paper towel daily. This was in the late summer last year. They were delicious!

There's something special about growing greens through the winter, both microgreens and sprouts. I use flats for my microgreens or shoots of all sorts including beans (broad, field, mung, etc), brassicas (cabbage, cauliflower, etc), peas of all kinds under both lights and on windowsills. I use sprouting jars for similar but also fenugreek, lentils, yet more mung beans, rapeseed, etc. I'm generally harvesting from 5 trays and growing on 5 more and sprouting in 5-8 jars at any one time to eat a LOT of salad every day of winter. Great stuff! 👍

My favorite is Japenese daikon radish microgreens. I just use regular potting soil. And I set them in a South facing window. They are quite spicey eaten alone but they are fantastic on a sandwich. I put them in everything. They are pretty quick to grow. My least favorite is swiss chard. Great video!

I just grew sweet corn to test the seeds from last year’s garden and was surprised that they sprouted because they were hybrid. But my chef friend mentioned eating them as micro greens and it shocked us how sweet and delicious

I've been wanting to try micro-greens! thank you for this video! I've done bean sprouts before (in a dark container, so they don't green up) and have used them in salads, Asian soups, and stir-fries. :)

Great idea! My seedlings have produced microgreens already. I will harvest some now!

Hi - Superb video. I really like the coir and potting compost idea. Coir on its own gives poor crops and seed compost is expensive. I invested in a heated propagator with lights to get salads and micro greens through the winter. It cost a bit, but it more than pays back with oodles of micro greens and all winter pick and come again salads. You said continue out doors. Personally I would not. Salmonella can be an issue with microgreens and washing kit with bleachy water is advisable between crops. I would not want to increase the risk of salmonella by growing outside. My slugs disagree that this is an issue. Lastly, though you did it, you didn't make it clear. The seeds need darkness for a few days to encourage germination. For those starting out the best book I have found on the subject, for amateurs, is "Microgreens: How to Grow Microgreens for Fun or Profit." Straightforward, no wordy filling and full of essential info. Are you going to cover grow lighting one day? I do look forward to your videos. Though you gave the Blue Peter game away when you referred to this as a project. (Laughing) Most of are so busy we do not need projects... Just good food grown in the simplest and most effective manner. Be well :)
