Is it a Sin?

Moral theology is a complicated subject in the Catholic Church. It's not enough to look just at one's actions. We must also consider intentions and circumstances.

My daughter's religion class at her Jesuit HS had a similar discussion on sin. Her teacher also underscored the importance of considering intent. My daughter and I had a great discussion as we drove home about what is considered a sin. The question she posed to me was is wearing makeup a sin? Depends on the intent. If you're doing it because you're trying to entice a married man, then yes, it's a sin. If you're wearing it to simply look nice, maybe hide some complexion flaws and it's not the focus of your day, then no, it's not a sin. I think Jesus' message to the Pharisees about when to obey the law (especially the ones they created) was very much focused on intent.

Object, intention, and circumstance! This is so important, thanks for speaking on it!

Dear Father Casey, I want to reiterate how much each and every one of your videos mean to me and I am sure to many others. We need leaders such as yourself who are well versed in all the teachings of our Church while allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to us and allowing us to recognize Him. Sometimes I am a little disheartened in reading some of the comments that follow. I suppose I never realized how many Catholics are so engrained in fanatical points of view, perhaps learned from the time they were children, and in doing so miss the magnificent gift of discerning and the feeling of abiding in Him who is all love. Please do not stop guiding us walking on this path with us. You are blessed and I for one, am thankful for you.

This reminds me of my own RCIA catechesis taught by a priest almost 30 years ago. Like you, he was concerned with our understanding WHY something is or is not sinful, and he too talked about the various factors that determine culpability. Thanks be to God for priests like you and like my RCIA priest who get under the surface and teach deeper meaning rather than "just because" theology.

Great video. I just recently started coming back to the church and it is so overwhelming. Seems like everything is a sin. I was thinking about switching churches but I'm glad I see videos like this. I'm just going to take my time and remain a catholic.

This reminds me of being a student of the Rev. Phillip Keane, S.S. 40 years ago. I loved learning Moral Theology! It's really hard to sin; you've got to work hard at it.

It takes 3 things to happen for an act to be sinful:
1. Serious matter
2. Full and free intention
3. Decision to act wrongly anyway.

When I went through RCIA nearly 30 years ago, I felt like I learned nothing as the priest was present exactly twice and the folks who took turns "teaching" had no answers to any of my questions. As a group, we were treated as if none of us had ever opened a Bible, heard of Jesus, or had any idea why we were in class in the first place. What I should have done was to make a list of the questions and leave the list with the priest. I'm not certain he could have answered all of them off the top of his head, but I am fairly sure he could have (easily?) researched them.

I always knew I would one day join the Church because of what I experienced at 2 pre-Vatican II Masses when I was brought there by some of my extended family, and I thank God for those two aunts.
