I just made this recipe, I'm eating it now! It's delicious. I made a few minor modifications, browning the onions and mashing them with the peas with a little homemade chicken broth.

This reminds me of a greek dish called fava, which is actually made not with fava beans but with mashed lathyrus, or less frequently split peas and other legumes, very similarly to this receipe.

I just made this. I used salt, but it still tasted bland. Instead of adding more salt, I added a splash of Asian fish sauce and that did the trick. I ate this on a slice of toasted bread.

Those dried peas look to me like lentils. Do Ancient Italians make a distinction between the two?

Do the peas need to be soaked beforehand? Should the boil water have salt?
