I think many statements of him are out of context. When you're still playing in the little leagues, yes you do need a portfolio. When you are applying for a job in the creative business, yes you need a portfolio. And I'm pretty sure that serious clients indeed look at what you did for other clients. The reputation builds over time and you can use your social networks when you get to the point of having a solid community around you. Why would you seek using your reputation through social network and burn your portfolio when you have a hundred followers, of which 90 people are friends and family? It doesn't make sense to me. So if he talks about how the portfolio doesn't matter and how your reputation is the only way, please add the information that you should already be in a more advanced position in your career where you can afford to throw your portfolio away. Please correct me if I'm seeing something wrong here.

Just be clear that this is for people that already got succeeded in the industry, if you're just starting what type of reputation do you want to work on if no one knows you?

He mentioned instagram, and instagram can act like a portfolio for many people. Maybe a specific portfolio website isn't needed but don't you need something where others can learn about you in some way?
