Crash caught on dashcam 2

Driver ran a red light going about 40mph. I hit her suv broadside at a bit under 20mph. She also hit the gold sedan that was just ahead of me in the left lane. No injuries to anyone. I wish I could have seen her to avoid the crash but her suv lined up perfectly with my car's a-pillar until she entered the intersection. I had the brakes to the floor less than a second after seeing her but it was too late. She admitted fault at the scene. It could have been a lot worse, but my Mercury did get a lot of damage to it's front end. The car was in almost perfect condition before the crash. Filmed on a GoPro Hero 8 on my custom camera mounts that I make in-house. See Part 2 (coming soon) of this video for an update on the Mercury's fate and the aftermath

As an update, the Mercury has been damaged beyond what I can repair and repair shops won't touch it unless an insurance company is backing the project. They won't serve a cash customer. The other driver's insurance company, Nationwide, says they absolutely will not repair the car and will only pay a small part of it's replacement cost and that I am responsible to pay the rest of whatever it costs to get another car. Nationwide also will not pay me for lost income totalling at least $6, 000. I filed a complaint with the Nebraska Department of Insurance and they say that it's correct for me to have to pay to replace my car. I tried to find a lawyer to represent me in a lawsuit against Nationwide but there aren't any lawyers in my state that will do damage suits like this. I had to sell the Mercury and currently only have my 1981 Dodge truck to get me through this winter. David Steiner at Nationwide insurance is the claim handler that told me that his company will only pay such a small amount and he literally told me that if I didn't like it, I should get an attorney. Nationwide has been a complete nightmare every step of the way

Glad you're okay and hope that nice Grand Marquis gets repaired well! Might have been a good thing you were in a car with a full frame

Fortunatelly you are intact, physically at least. Mercury acted like a tank. Has the insurance declared its total loss? I hope not...

If that happened to me in my Crown Vic I would react a lot more severely than “oh crap.” Good thing you have the dashcam and I hope insurance aren’t stingy buttholes

That just shows how much of a tank the Panther body cars are, and especially full-size body on frame cars in general. It took out that unibody crossover like nothing. Yes the Grand Marquis had front end damage but the entire car was still mostly intact and could be driven.

Damn. No space to brake or evade. :/
At least it seems that the bumper did a good job of protecting the rest of the car.

I drive a very rare jdm sports car and I’m extra careful when passing through major intersections even when it’s green for me because I know there would be careless drivers like these blowing red lights. I make sure to look both ways while passing though defensively and cautiously because the car is almost irreplaceable even if the insurance fully paid out in case it is totaled.

Hi there,

Of course, I'll credit you on screen if you wish!
Also, would you happen to have any updates?
Thanks!

Bad news. Thank heavens for USAA and Geico. They were there when I was young and stupid totalling cars. No games, no BS, my payments were good and so were theirs. USAA reimbursed a part of the new paint too, not just the basic blue book value.

I have a 2004 Grand Marquis that I absolutely love. I bought it in 2018. It's not perfect cosmetically, but it's clean, rust-free and mechanically excellent.

Don't get me started on insurance company rip-offs. The whole industry is criminal, and not just vehicle insurance, every kind. But vehicle insurance is a very specific wad of crap. Anything that is mandated by law should be NOT FOR PROFIT! Period, end of discussion. Either make it optional, or make it not for profit. Making it both mandatory and for profit, while only having regulations that create MORE profit for the companies and almost none to protect citizens from their own providers, is the very definition of conflict of interest. It *guarantees* citizens will always come out worse than they should.

My first thought: No, no, nooo! Not a Panther Mercury Grand Marquis! Such a classic. Glad nobody was hurt though.
