When I started learning guitar a few years ago he caught my attention in a big way. His tone and expression thru his playing is amazing. He is excellent at balancing slow melodic playing with going super fast, which works so well. Im so glad to hear someone besides me mention his great voice. That’s what I took away from his blues recordings. He has an amazing voice.

Great video Brian. As far as gear, I remember extensive discussions on some of the message boards about his earlier setups - not so much discussion about what he was using in the years before his death unfortunately. During his 80s rock stint he played a couple of different Stratocasters before opting for his custom Charvel San Dimas setups (with EMG pickups), while occasionally playing a custom Hamer he had as well as his Les Pauls (including Greeny). During that time he had an extensive set of Boss Pedals on his boards (DS-1, SD-1, Flanger, Delay, Octaver, etc.) and a Roland Chorus Echo that gave some pretty cool effects. After switching to primarily blues playing in the early 90s he used a Marshall Guv'nor and a Ibanez Tubescreamer (he had used this somewhat early in his career as well) among other pedals and rack-based effects units. Throughout both periods Marshall Amps were pretty much always in his setups, but I do recall some discussions that during his 70s work he used a VOX setup.

Yes, this is one of his last public appearances unfortunately, but a great one! This version of Empty Rooms is somewhat a “reissue” of his astonishing, most viewed of his 1987 performance in Stockholm which is my personal favorite version! It has all in it, from the beautiful intro solo So far away, till the end solo, although here it’s a bit shorter. Even Jonathan’s bass looks almost identical as Bob Daisley’s bass from back then. The only bigger difference is that this version is maybe half a tact slower in its whole than the 1987 version, at least it sounds like it. Nevertheless it’s a great version of an amazing song

I've always found this to be a disappointing performance. To me it seems tired, lacking in focus and energy. There are some good performances from this show, but this one just doesn't bear comparison with earlier performances of this song. To see him perform this in the 1980's was something else. Probably the loudest stage volume of any guitar player I've seen.
