Spinning Flax from the Fold

I continue to try different methods to hold and spin the fibers. Since people use the fold method with wool I thought I'd give that a try. I did try before with little success but I did finally figure out how to handle the fiber enough to get a good spin. I have been spinning off the fold with my double drive with some excellent success. It does produce some fluffy tow as the fibers are being spun and the fluff is coming from the fiber bundle itself. It indicates that I have not pulled out all the tow. This removes most of the remaining fluff. Changing subject a bit, Im going to try something to create good fibers for making paper from the tow. Back to the spinning. The fold method has some faults because the fibers can create loops that are loose and can snag on things that stick out or upon other fibers. I read that some actually will take the singles and wash them in boiling water and washing soda prior to putting the fibers on the loom. I will try that.

I've been looking for a way to spin flax without a distaff. I want to try spinning flax without having to buy a distaff. Thanks for sharing this.

Thank you for showing how you spin flax from the fold. How do you make joins? I have tried it from the fold with flax top but I always get a big lump in the yarn at the join.
