Can you only share a file from the channel without adding the external user to the channel?

Beyond frustrating how my company can't seem to rollout any of this. They have offshored all of it and all they ever do is turn functions OFF. We can't even sync to SharePoint/Teams anymore. I was there for six months and they said they were getting too many calls so they turned it off. Now everything is four steps instead of one to add docs so everyone has access.

What is the benefit of shared channels over simply creating a new team and inviting guests?
It seems like shared channels require B2B direct connect set-up and a lot setup in the office 365 admin portal, which is generally not required by simply creating a new team and inviting guests.
